EuroQuest 8 Pre-Reg. Deadline and Hotel Deadline Coming Up Soon

The deadline for pre-registration at a discounted rate for this year's EuroQuest convention (Oct. 22) is
rapidly approaching! For those of you who have already pre-registered, we are looking forward to seeing
you there. For those of you who have not, why wait? Friday, Oct. 22 is also the deadline for reserving rooms
in our room block at a discounted rate at this year's new location, the Hilton Pikesville in Pikesville,
Maryland. The decision to move to the new location was dictated by the need for more space; the meeting room
space at the Hilton Pikesville is about 50% greater than the space at the prior location. So, please join us
for some fun and games as space should not be an issue this year.

There are more details see the EuroQuest website:

http://euroquest.gamesclubofmd.org

The website has been recently updated, and here are some of the latest developments:

1. We are excited about this year because we will have an expanded presence for Essen games through a new
feature we call "EssenFest at EuroQuest," where, basically, we bring the hottest of the hot new Essen
games to you. Convention attendees can learn the new games, rate the games, and have a chance of winning
copies of some of the new Essen games at a prize drawing. Details are posted here:

http://euroquest.gamesclubofmd.org/EQ_EssenFest.aspx

2. The Pikesville Hilton is offering a number of amenities to both EuroQuest convention attendees and
hotel guests during EuroQuest 8. All EQ attendees with a valid badge will receive a 10% discount on all
purchases at the hotel restaurant. Guests staying at the hotel during EuroQuest will receive free use of
the Baltimore Fitness and Tennis Club, which is attached to the hotel. Finally, specific times, prices
and menu items have been posted for the hotel's food and beverage service that will be available during
convention hours. Details are posted here:

Gaming Conventions - Thoughts and Musings

After a busy year of convention going (Gathering of Friends, Origins, Hot Lead (Ontario), Fallcon
(Calgary) and a couple of TABSCON (toronto) gaming days) playing with a lot of greate people I have had a
good chance to observe what makes gaming conventions work (or not). Over the next month (starting in
November in order to let the Essen frenzy die down) or so I am going to post a series of "articles" noting my
observations and musings in the following areas:

1. Convention Location and Facilities

About the factors which make up a good location and environment for gaming.

2. Leadership

About the characteristics which make for a good leader for a gaming conventions. Also about what leading a
convention means for you and the convention as a whole.

3. Organization

About what things one has to think about when organizing and running a convention in terms of jobs and
responsiblities. Also a few thoughts on recruitment of a convention team and how to sustain it.

4. Life and Death of Conventions

About the cycle of conventions and what makes them grow or decline.

If anyone would like me to expand on any particular point please let me know.

The Game Cabinet

http://gamecabinet.com/

Today marks the tenth anniversary of its most recent update. This was the
website (along with Sarrett's GAME REPORT) that got me started in this hobby
back in the mid 90s. I still visit occasionally just to remember what it was
like "back in the day" and to read old musings from Mike, Ken and others.

Any of you "kids" who grew up with BGG at your fingertips might want to go
check out how the rest of us survived before Aldie and Derk blew the joint
wide open.

And for those of you who were involved in the hobby *before* the internet
(ie, not me) -- I can't imagine what that must have been like.

At any rate, thanks Ken. Happy "anniversary"

Re: The Game Cabinet

Ah, the Game Cabinet. As much as I love the Geek, the Game Cabinet had a much bigger effect on me when I
discovered it in early 1998. Of course, part of that was that I had a lot of catching up to do, but even so, it
was like discovering a whole world that I never knew existed. Not unlike Dorothy when she first opened her
technicolor door (except no flying monkeys, thankfully!).

Going through all those articles 12 years ago was like a crash course in everything I had been missing. The
reviews, the Essen reports, all the Sumo back issues...great stuff. There is nothing quite like the joy of
discovery and the Cabinet provided me with just that.

We all owe you such a huge debt, Ken, along with all those early and intrepid authors. Happy anniversary and
thank you, again.

Larry

Re: The Game Cabinet

I have fond memories of the Game Cabinet as well, and have been around
long enough to remember both the excitement when Ken started it (no more
snail mail rules sets from Mike Siggins in England, though that was
quite the service in its time too) and the horror when he announced he
was letting it go dormant.

Ten years later, though, I'm overjoyed that it's still available online
as I occasionally still need to use it for reference (and sometimes just
for a nostalgic read of Mike's crankiness.

I also did want to add a shoutout to Frank Branham, who, after Ken no
longer had the time, took over the Game Cabinet concept at his Gaming
Dumpster website, before he turned all his files over to what became the
Boardgamegeek we know today.

Re: The Game Cabinet

We didn't know any difference before the internet.

There were magazines and conventions and word of mouth.

Avalon Hill published the General - Wargamming was a larger part of the hobby
in the 70's and 80's but it also usually had a article concerning non-wargames.
Also there was TSR's Dragon which in its early days also covered board games
and even included a free board game every few issues.

Most of the gamers I knew crossed over. They would play Boardgames, Wargames,
RPG's and even miniatures to some extent. There seems to be a lot more
polarization in the broad gaming hobby today.

A lot of gamers called what we now call Euro's, "Board and Pretzel" games. In
general they were not highly regarded as there had been so many poor ones
published in the 70's. AH's Civilization was a big hit. We thought it was
great, even with a 8 hour game time .

Game People Play in Massachusetts imported Euro's. Crazy Egor was selling
Hexagames at conventions. Also, I encountered Alan Moon with his White Wind
games at a convention in 1993 or 1994 I also think I got my first copy of Sumo
about this time and quickly subscribed - reading Mike's editorials and the
letters columns helped increase my knowledge of the great games coming from
Europe. I subscribed early on to the Game Report but was not too impressed by
the first year or so - it seemed to focus a lot on party and family games. It
got better a few years later.

I first encountered Boardgames and Wargames Internet community on the Genie BBS
back around 1991. The newsgroup Rec.Games.Board also started about this time.

The Game Cabinet

I to remember the Game Cabinet back in the day. It was the Geek and the Boardgamenews website rolled into one.
Along with rec.games.board and the DIGers newsgroup (which is still very active) it was the place to go to
find out about Euro Gaming. I would recommend anyone with an interest in early Euro Gaming read the Essen
Reports from the early 1990's on the Game Cabinet to see how much our hobby has changed.
