RPGnet Review: Age of Empires III

Though I haven't posted much about it here lately, I've been continued
a review a week over at RPGnet through the Spring, into Summer. Here's
my latest:

AGE OF EMPIRES III [5/5]
http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/13/13194.phtml

Review Summary:
"Age of Empires III is a great new Euro-design by Glenn Drover. Like
recent games such as Caylus and Pillars of the Earth it depends upon
multiple role selection, but here they are instead used to fuel a
majority-control game, really differentiating it from the crowd."

Hi

I'm sorry for you but from 21 to 23 of September in Modena (2 hours
drving from Florence) there is ModCon (www.modcon.it) Italian biggest
game convention.

I think most of the Italian gamers (at least from center-north part of
Italy) will be there.

If you think you could make the driving from Florence to Modea I can
give you all the infos you need. In modcon we have a real great area
for free boardgaming ... the entrance fee to the con is only 7 euros
for a day 12 euros for 2/3

good play

[Review] The Curse of the Ruby Rhino

I'm starting to have a negative vibe whenever I realize that the main
mechanic of any game is die rolling. A famous game, L-C-R, simply
has players roll dice and move chips around in a completely random
fashion – yet has many fans! But for me, I have to say that simply
rolling the dice with no decision making at all tends to rub me the
wrong way. Doing this for lengthy periods of time only worsens the
process – it's the game that never ends.

Unfortunately, this is how I feel about the Curse of the Ruby Rhino:
A Dastardly Dice Game (Gamewright, 2007 – Ken Brunson). The back of
the box claims that the game takes ten minutes, but the game takes
considerably longer than that and feels even lengthier due to the
excessive tedium. The components are top notch, and the theme of
hunting for treasure sounds fascinating; but it all fails when you
realize that each turn you simply roll dice and mechanically follow
instructions. Even the children playing the game got bored during the
dreary, mind numbing game play.

A treasure box is placed in the middle of the table, and a certain
amount of coins are dealt to each player, depending on how many are in
the game. The remainder of the coins (if any) is placed in the box
along with the precious "Ruby Rhino". The last person to see a
real-life rhino takes two special six-sided dice, and the game begins.

On a player's turn, they roll the dice and follow whatever
combination is shown on both dice. If one of the dice shows a skull
and crossbones, then they simply take no action, and play passes to
the next player. If the player rolls a "double" – two items that are
the same, they take another roll after resolving the action. Actions
include:

[Review] Toss Your Cookies

The title of Toss Your Cookies (Gamewright Games, 2007 – Idea Zone
Product Development) sounds a bit disgusting – perhaps a game pointed
at adolescents with low- brow humor ("toss your cookies" is an
American euphemism for vomiting). And even though I'm constantly
advocating designers to find new themes, I'm certainly glad that the
title has nothing to do with this. Rather, it's actually about
tossing cookies onto the table – a game well suited for young
children.

With wonderful drawings and terrific, sturdy components, Toss Your
Cookies is a nice variant on the game idea introduced in the public
domain "spoons". Players are attempting to collect cookies that are
of the same type, along with a glass of milk. While the game might
bore adults (although there's some frenetic moments which are quite
hilarious), I've found that kids enjoy it – as much for the simple,
fun game play as well as the beautiful components. Although we really
want to eat cookies when the game is over (the artwork is THAT good),
it's a good kid's game that I enjoy playing with them, and it handles
up to eight players.

Eight different round cookie tiles are included with the game: Iced
sugar cookies, gingerbread men, fortune cookies, generic "Oreo"
cookies, chocolate chip cookies, macadamia nut cookies, fudge swirl,
and fruit center cookies. One set of six identical cookies is used
for each player as well as some "wild" cookies and "half-eaten"
cookies, which, along with a single milk card, total seven cards for
each player. The tiles (cards) are shuffled face down on the table,
and each player draws seven of them. Two custom six-sided dice are
given to the player who last ate a homemade cookie, and the game is
ready to begin.

I expect that Microsoft will create a closed platform and I won't invest
in a clost computing system,

I'm not interested in computer assisted gaming. A great many of the
games we play are trivially assisted by minimal AI systems (eg Through
the Desert). The incentive to create such systems is present and
sufficient: They will be created. I'm not interested in such games or
the games at the other end of that slippery slope.
