The Official Catan Food Contest

Throughout November and December, Catan players, food enthusiasts and
critics, chefs, gamers, non –gamers, and anybody else are invited to
join in the Official Catan Food Contest! So gather up all of your
grain, start brainstorming, and come join us!

Your task is to come up with culinary spectacles Catan has never seen.
Then take up to three high resolution (300dpi) pictures of your master
piece and add some explanatory text. A sentence may be fine, but maybe
you have a funny story that goes along with the food creation. Please
submit photos and text to following email address:
culinarycatancontest@...

While wheat seems to be the preferred food source, and most people end
up making Catan Pizzas and Cakes, feel free to explore other paths.
Sushi Catan? Sure, why not. Do whatever you like, as long as it is
tasteful and has something to do with Catan.

An experienced team of visual food critics at Mayfair games will look
painstakingly at each and every culinary creation to decide the
winner. As you can imagine, this will be a painful process, as ever
swelling eyeballs, grumbling tummies and mouth watering sensations
will accompany the examination process.

The beauty of this contest is that everybody wins! You win
automatically, because you will have created something tasty for
yourself, your friends and family. We will also send each of the
participants a small souvenir!

But there's also some real stuff to win, of course. The Mayfair judges
will select three of the most remarkable Catan food creatoions. The

I'm with you - I prefer Attribute and fine it MORE socially
entertaining than A2A in the right setting because of the added
creativity of coming up with the subject. In the right group, this
can lead to some hilarious attributes...

I do prefer Apples to Apples with kids though.

Blink and Flix Mix. Both plugged as kids games, but are speed pattern
matching games.

I like both of them, and I detest Set. Go figure.

If necessary I prefer the official rules: when everybody but one player is ready will the last player have 30
seconds to finish his turn.

Re: speed / pattern recognition games (Was: "Space dealer" ...)

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Ricochet Robots - maybe it's a little
too involved.

Also MaNiKi rereleased as Crazy Circus. Players try to mentally get
three circus animals into a particular pattern. Not my type of game,
but it is in the same vein as Set.

Also Bruno Faidutti's dice pattern game, Bongo (no relation to Ubongo).

Re: speed / pattern recognition games (Was: "Space dealer" ...)

I'll echo the recommendations for Bongo (esp. brain-burning if you add
in the poacher dice) and Twitch (best w/5 players, as it makes it more
difficult to reverse & figure out when to throw cards than with 4 or
6.)

I'll add the always classic Arriba/Jungle Speed & the equally oddball
Tohuwabohu.

And don't forget Affenraffen, which, like Tohuwabohu, comes from
designer Michael Schacht.

Newer is the French game Du Balai - I think the rules are a bit
broken, but the game is fun nevertheless.

Ok, on sleazing extra candy: Tears are key. Tears will normally get
you the double-bagger. You can also try the "you missed me" routine,
but it's risky. Only go there for chocolate.

File - For Sale Policy Text

Spielfrieks "For sale" Posting Guidelines

A For Sale ("[FS]") post is any message that is primarily meant to advertise games for direct sale or to draw
attention to an eBay auction or a "Games For Sale" web page.

First, let us point out that there is a separate mailing list at Yahoo Groups, Spielfrieks Marketplace,
which was established in April 2002 to serve as the "classified ads" of the Spielfrieks community.
Spielfrieks Marketplace can be found here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/spielfrieks-marketplace/

For Sale [FS] posts on Spielfrieks must follow these guidelines:

1. For Sale [FS] posts must be limited to one message per person per week.

2. No game should be advertised for sale more than once by the same seller. That is, if you say "I have Password
available for $50" then you shouldn't come back a week later and say "I have Password available for $5."

3. No posts should be made to remind everyone that a previously-announced eBay auction is soon ending.

4. Any For Sale [FS] posts (to either list) should be for Spielfrieky games -- not war games, not roleplaying
games, not CCGs, etc. Spielfrieky games are "sophisticated board and card games, with an emphasis on
German or European titles."

5. The [FS] tag must be used in the subject line so that those who do not want to read such posts can easily
delete them.

6. For Trade [FT] posts are subject to the same restrictions as For Sale [FS] posts.

Members who do not follow these guidelines on Spielfrieks will receive a warning, followed by more drastic

I think this is a lot worse than just having a timer with an adequate
amount of time. You get situations where a couple of players are shut
down, a couple of players have simple situations and can throw down
their cards very quickly, and one player who's got a complex situation
gets 45 seconds to deal with it. No fun.

How are the rules broken?
