Borderlands (was: Queen City Confluence - Day 1)

Yes, my only real problem with Borderlands is its learning curve.
Like you, I appreciate the challenge, but it isn't a terribly well
known game and it tends not to leave a good first impression because
newbies often don't play it well. It does make it hard to spread the
word.

I'm glad to hear the maps are working well. The fellow that made
them sent an electronic copy to me and I was very impressed at the
job he did--they match the style of the original maps extremely
well. I urged him to put them on the Geek, so it's good to see that
they're being used. If we're talking about the same maps, you may
notice one area has a familiar name; since he first heard about
Borderlands from one of my reviews, he named one of the territories
after me! I guess you take immortality wherever you can find it!

I've been hoping for a Borderlands reprint for at least 15 years.
When AH decided to remake Cosmic, the best case scenario was that it
would be such a hit that they'd redo some of the other Eon games--in

It wouldn't be much of a variant if it didn't change the strategies needed!

Let me add my own little variant: players may draw 2 cards (and keep both) when they use action D.
Interestingly this variant will not only have experienced players shift their strategies, but also some
of the less experienced players.

File - For Sale Policy Text

Spielfrieks "For sale" Posting Guidelines

A For Sale ("[FS]") post is any message that is primarily meant to advertise games for direct sale or to draw
attention to an eBay auction or a "Games For Sale" web page.

First, let us point out that there is a separate mailing list at Yahoo Groups, Spielfrieks Marketplace,
which was established in April 2002 to serve as the "classified ads" of the Spielfrieks community.
Spielfrieks Marketplace can be found here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/spielfrieks-marketplace/

For Sale [FS] posts on Spielfrieks must follow these guidelines:

1. For Sale [FS] posts must be limited to one message per person per week.

2. No game should be advertised for sale more than once by the same seller. That is, if you say "I have Password
available for $50" then you shouldn't come back a week later and say "I have Password available for $5."

3. No posts should be made to remind everyone that a previously-announced eBay auction is soon ending.

4. Any For Sale [FS] posts (to either list) should be for Spielfrieky games -- not war games, not roleplaying
games, not CCGs, etc. Spielfrieky games are "sophisticated board and card games, with an emphasis on
German or European titles."

5. The [FS] tag must be used in the subject line so that those who do not want to read such posts can easily
delete them.

6. For Trade [FT] posts are subject to the same restrictions as For Sale [FS] posts.

Members who do not follow these guidelines on Spielfrieks will receive a warning, followed by more drastic

Some Recent Gaming

I had some good gaming at the comic Warehouse and my regular gaming
group last night and played the following:

Myrkirnos by YS

The third game from this publisher and another good game. This is
more a light Euro as compared with YS or Caylus. A game where you
have to balance placement with set collection. A very loose theme of
collecting articfacts for a museum. A nine out of ten after one play.

Pipeline

a 3D version of Twixt where you try and connect your pipeline
across the board. Good for children but not much for adults. A six
out of ten.

Jensits Von Theben

The very strongly themed archaeology game. An interesting game
where you have to balance your digging with getting back in time to
display your find at a museum. Very easy to learn but does have a
fairly large randomness factor. An Eight out of ten after Two plays.

Has anybody gotten their games from Danny Webb?

Way back in April (!) Danny Webb posted a list of games here for
sale. Did anybody else send him money for a game, and if so, did
anybody receive anything from him? I sent him a money order on 4/17
for Samurai Swords and got a couple of E-mails with excuses about why
he hadn't mailed the game, but I haven't received the game (or any
response to my E-mails for the last month).

I know that Spielfrieks isn't responsible, caveat emptor, etc. Any
other suggestions?

Survive / Escape from Atlantis question

I couldn't find any reference to this on the geek, but apparently there
is a rules difference between (my edition) of the Waddingtons' Atlantis
vs. Survive (and maybe other versions of Atlantis). Specifically, my
rules state that when sinking a land piece, any Atlanteans get moved to
some other available ground (and oddly, ANY available ground ANYWHERE on
the island). Only if there is no vacant spot on the island do they
become swimmers.

The first question I had was: who gets to choose where the each
Atlantean moves to, the active player, or the respective Atlantean
owners? But in trying to find the answer to this, it seems that the
posted editions of the rules I could find had no mention of land
teleportation. Having not played yet, my instincts tell me that I don't
like the teleportation rule. Has anyone played both ways and found
teleportation to be more interesting?

There are other differences, such as setup and dolphins and whirlpools,
but I'm pretty sure which version of the rules I prefer for those.

Thanks,

Curt

Yes I did after a bit of a delay. He told me he had a family emergency that
sent him out of town. He said he emailed all the people who were waiting for
games, but I never got the email originally. But he did respond once he was
back and did send me my games and I got them right away. And he even included
a freebie as a surprise. This was at the end of April.

There are two versions of Atlantis rules that I'm aware of (I have
copies of both) as well as Survive. (A "compare & contrast" project
has been on my "website to-do" list for a long time.)

Essentially, the set from 1986 is pretty lenient - I think that's
probably the one you're referring to. The 1996 set is MUCH more
vicious... a bit more random, perhaps, but a better game experience.
Survive is substantially different - it's probably the best pure game
system, but the least enjoyable experience (because the bits are just
so darn cool.)

Depending on which Atlantis you have, you might also have the Swirly
Spinner, an odd plastic device that you "swirl" to make a ball bearing
spin around the roulette wheel-ish list of monsters & movement, rather
than the dice in the later edition. The dice work better - but the
Swirly Spinner is one of the ultimate "odd" bits.

Yes, I have the swirly spinner. It's kind of a pain to spin, and takes
longer than dice, but I do think I like the distribution that it
produces slightly better than the dice (although I wish there were even
slightly fewer "dives", which add a bit more chaos to the game than I
would like).

> > There are other differences ...

The rule differences I'm aware of (I'm not sure which rules are from
which--I just read all the versions I could find), and what I think I
prefer, after now having played once over lunch today:
** Setup **
Land placement: Random within land type, or totally random? My
set doesn't have any of the land tiles with text on the bottom (I have
the Waddingtons plastic 3d pieces), so I don't see any point in doing a
full randomization. Actually, I guess it would still be fairly
interesting to give some extended defense to the higher ground farther
from the center. But that seems a bit obvious in terms of meeple
placement. Maybe I'll try that next time just to experiment.
Boat placement: One rule set indicated that boats are placed by
players, and *2* boats are placed per player (one at a time). That seems
like a lot of boats to start with. I like the idea of player placed
boats for variety, but I couldn't think of an equitable way to position

I was relieved to see your reply, and even more relieved to see an E-
mail from Danny himself saying that he would refund my money via
PayPal. Glad he turned out to be a distracted seller instead of a
total deadbeat!
