Yeah, it's the same store, Anye, but at the time Ted was working down
here, that program wasn't in place. Prior to that, Game Parlor's
attitude toward discounts was very consistent--they never gave them.
I've seen games take up shelf space for over a decade (no
exagerration) and still show the list price. Hell, for a while, they
sold used games and even THOSE were at list price!

I guess the competition from the Internet stores finally had an
effect. The good news is, the current program is a pretty nice one.

This would be one of the few instances where I would agree with an
assessment of price gouging.

Selling used games at the same price as new games? That's ridiculous.

I think the point is that a game is, at the end of the day, just a game.
I would currently put Go at the top of my pile of best ever game, and
it's clearly got a lot going for it because it supports a professional
playing setup and has millions of keen players and there's no obvious
way to tweak its fantastically elegant ruleset aside from fiddling a
little with Komis. But had I never played it I don't think I'd be
significantly poorer or different in my day to day life.

Pete.

Sure you would. Its obvious you would be unable to GO.

I'd just count differently and not be able to weiqi instead, which would
be much less traumatic... ;-)

How do you price gouge on a non-essential item? Gas, food, clothing
sure, but games? I don't see it. If it is too expensive people won't
buy it because the don't need it. They will spend their entertainment
dollars elsewhere.

This is no longer true -- however, you can be required to replace the
shields if judges feel they are (inadvertently) marked. In addition, it's
easy enough to perceive the silouhette of the card through the sleeve that
Alpha and Collectors cards are not allowed.
