Thanks for the kind words. It's pretty difficult to know, when you start
something like this, if it will actually be useful and that's why I'm
looking for opinions from others.

The game is called Forum Romanum and you can find more details here at
boardgamegeek:

I really like it because it's quick and completely without any luck.

Game Central Station Is Back

It... is... alive!

Appropriately on Halloween, Game Central Station has crawled out of
it's Yahoo-built grave and once again wanders the moors of The Gaming
Kingdom.

It's still a few pieces shy of completion (not for nuthin' was I one
of the playtesters on Nodwick) but that isn't stopping me from finally
bringing the Station back to "life".

Of interest:

- new address, thanks to the good folks at http://www.gamesurplus.com

Game Central Station now has a permanent home at http://www.theswitchingyard.com

- new look

- new content (thanks to the gracious beneficence of Alan "I've Got
Two SdJ's Now Can Afford To Be Nice" Moon)... the Station is the
online home of the content of The Color of the Wind newsletter. (BTW,
does anybody know if there was actually a 4th newsletter?!)

- same odd/warped love of games & sense of humor

Please proofread for me - send all spelling & factual blunders to
fluffdaddy@...

Enjoy!

I haven't listened to his report, or the 'geek reports for that matter,
and doubt I will for the reverse of the values you state above. I can
read text far faster and much more efficiently than I can listen. I can
search written text, index it, skip to the bits I'm particularly
interested with ease and accuracy, can cite exact points and paragraphs
of the text to others, can cut'n'paste it into other texts, and can
rapidly context shift between a text and other work without losing track
of wither -- none of which can I do as easily with audio recordings.

This pattern is not specific to the game arena. In other fields I've
heard similar various friends of mine. As an example, IT Conversations
(http://www.itconversations.com/) is chock-a-block with interviews and
presentations by people I respect pretty much all talking about things
I'm both personally and professionally interested in. I've been
tracking the blog for the better part of 9 months now but have yet to
make it through the third recording -- even tho I could spend billable
work hours on it.

Conversely, if they had transcripts I'd have read them all by now.

[SR] New releases: In 80 Tage um die Welt, die Weinhändler

In my latest session on Friday I played some more new releases, so I
thought my opinion might be of interest to some.

In 80 Tage um die Welt (Around the World in 80 Days), Kosmos

Very much a family game and an enjoyable one, although I think it's
far too early to jump the "this will be SdJ 2005" bandwagon.
The card + action selection mechanism is clever and works well: do
you take the card you need that is associated with an action that's
useless to you... or take a bad card with a useful action?
With the cards you collect, you try to make it across the world as
fast as possible (in terms of game turns) but - much more important -
collecting as few points (called "travel days") as possible.

It was the first game for all five players and all the pawns stayed
relatively close together, as falling behind seemed a risky thing to
do. Erik and Wouter tried to get ahead of everyone else but both
(especially Erik) spent many travel days in doing so. Wouter ran out
of cards near the end of the journey and while he spent turns
refilling his hand, everyone else raced past and made it back to
London. Marije, who had been at the back of the pack during the
beginning, actually reached London first and with a decent score (78
days), but she had to wait to see what the rest would do. Margit
reached London in the next turn and she had spent only 76 days. I
needed a lucky event card to beat that score, which I didn't get so I
tied for second place with 78... Erik was well over 80 and Wouter
still didn't have the final card he needed and was left stranded in
New York.
Pleasant game, and although not earth-shattering, will definitely

I am very happy about this news of a reprint. I made bids on two different
eBay auctions, but was outbid both times by Greg Aleknevicus...

[Review] 10 Days in Africa / 10 Days in the USA

I first heard about 10 Days in Africa and 10 Days in the USA (Out of
the Box Publishing, 2003 - Alan Moon and Aaron Weissblum) when looking
through one of the company's catalogs. When I read how educational
the game was, I immediately had negative thoughts; as educational
often equals boring when it comes to board games. Still, the duo of
Moon and Weissblum have produced some wonderful games, and Out of the
Box had a good reputation, so I was interested in trying them out. If
the "educational" part of the game was true, I'd have even more fodder
for my "games are educational" campaign I wage at my school.

My initial play was a two-player USA game with my wife. As soon as
the game ended, we immediately played another, then switched to the
Africa version. The next day, I played the game in a multiplayer
situation - several times. Again, a few days later, my wife eagerly
requested the game one more time. Not since Lost Cities has a game so
intrigued my wife and the others I introduced it to. I have to admit,
the educational value is certainly there (especially in the Africa
version), and the game is excellent. I prefer the two-player version,
but even with four, downtime is fairly low, decisions are
gut-wrenching, but the game is fun, leaving one with a "just one more
time!" feeling.

The game board is placed in the middle of the table, depicting the
USA with its fifty states or the continent of Africa with forty of its
countries. Each player takes two sets of racks - each numbered from
one to ten, with slots to place ten tiles. A stack of tiles is
shuffled and placed near the board. Starting with one player, players
draw one tile, placing it in any open slot in their racks. This
continues in a clockwise method, until all players have filled their

Isn't this because of the merger with Eagle?

Some Comments on Naval Battles World War II

The first of my new Essen purchases to try out and it was a little
bit of a disappointment. This is a naval warfare game by the Author
of Modern Naval Battles. I found that though this game had some nice
new mechanisms it played somewhat flat since you now can play as many
cards as you like in a game and that you win when someone sinks 25
points of ships. I would defintely put back the fog of war roll to
make the game more interesting. However it was very nicely produced
and there is no text on the cards though it took a little
interpreting of what the various symbols meant. A Seven out of ten
after one play.

I took Manhattan

Greets,

Manhattan is one of those games that has a very simple surface
mechanic, and can be played that level.

I really like the destructive 'tit for tat' psychology of the game.
It is at its best when played competitively and with a bit of grudge.

Sorry, I don't know Capitol...
