True, especially for Babylon and Egypt. However, you can also count
commodities held in hand and treasury tokens for the final point squares.

RE: Spielfrieks posts half of what they were last year this time

Two possible reasons:

1) Spielfrieks is closed to new users. Attrition has taken its toll.
2) BoardGameGeek Geek Lists (and articles) seem to have taken the place of a
lot of the chat type of traffic that you would see here. They are
incredibly busy for something that wasn't built to be a vehicle for
conversation.

I just noticed that Spielfriek total posts for the month of May were
a little over half than what they were last year.

2004 - 1378
2003 - 2500ish

..any possible reasons for this?

Re: Unwinnable Positions

Some other games:

In Carcassonne, it is possible (though VERY unlikely), that all of one's
meeples can be in the state where you'll never get them back and
they will never score extra points. For instance, on a farm that
has been closed off, or on a cloister next to a hole where no remaining
tile can fit.

In New England, it is possible to be hemmed in so that all your
land tiles are occupied and there isn't any room for more tiles.
That would have to be the result of very poor play, though.

The Empire Builder series has the case where a player is out of
money and their train is stuck at a dead end (since trains can't
turn around).

In Fresh Fish, it's possible that you can get all your shops scored
early, by which point there's not much else you can do.

In 6 Nimmt!, you can get dealt a 10-card straight. :)

And of course, in Diplomacy you can have your last unit eliminated
while you still own a non-home supply center. In this situation you
can vote on draws and concessions but cannot build any units.

Hi, Chris!

Yes, if only one player wants to race, it happens and that player
automatically wins (for 20, minus any payments to rivals.)

This introduces an interesting mechanic. Suppose I have a much
longer route and I have to pay 6 in rentals to the player with
the shorter route. Thus, either he gets 20 (if I don't enter) or
he gets 26 and I get 4 (if I do enter.)

In this situation, I'll often enter, unless the other player is the
one I'm clearly contending with for the win. I lose 2 net to this
player but I gain 4 on everyone else.

Re: Spielfrieks posts half of what they were last year this time

I know the issue of spielfrieks being closed to new users has been hashed over in some detail in the past, and
that the problem is not one that can be corrected with any reasonable amount of effort. Its effects would
seem to be inevitable however, and I fear that eventually spielfrieks will see considerably fewer posts
than it does today.

Depends on how long Step 2 is. The board can get mighty crowded. This
is dependant on players not buying power plants unless the get a

Let him buy the "sucker" plant. that freezes him out for the rest of
the turn, and there may be a good plant coming. If he is not
increasing his generating capacity by much, let him buy the plant.

Brett's May games played

This month seemed slow to me as far as games go. Summertime tends to be
very busy for me, though, so fewer games played really comes as no
surprise. I got in 21 playings of 14 different games (25 of 15 if you
count Magic):
    4 x Ticket to Ride
    3 x Blokus
    2 x San Juan
    2 x Corsari
    Caesar and Cleopatra
    Elfenland
    Goldland
    Guillotine
    Hansa
    Medici
    Movie Mania
    Prototype
    StreetSoccer
    Sunken City

I also got in 4 complete playings of StreetSoccer online. Won 2, lost 2.
Story of my life. ;-)

Games purchased this month were:
    Hansa
    Ticket to Ride
    San Juan
    Blokus

And that's a bad thing?? :o)

I'm probably opening a can of worms here, but 2500 posts in a month can be
overwhelming. I probably read only about 5 - 10% of the posts made now as
the board has grown SO large it is practically impossible to keep up with
all of the chatter.

The reasons for the decrease in posts are likely many, including the
presence of so many other forums on which to participate. Plus, some folks
might be feeling like me ... overwhelmed and, to be frank, disinterested in
many of the discussions.

Don't get me wrong, I think Spielfrieks is a wonderful forum. However, I do
find it difficult to keep up with the messages and find that the "noise" to
"content" ratio for me personally has gone way up (more noise, less content
I'm interested in).
