March 2004 report

Games played:

Blokus (x6), Feurio (x3), Mamma Mia (x3), Carcassonne with all four
expansions (x2), King Lui (x2), Kogge (x2), Age of Steam/England,
Agora, Ark of the Covenant, Corsari, Igel Agern, Mad Gab, Oasis, Ra,
Richelieu, Settlers of Catan/Das Buch, Steam Tunnel, Wizard, Wongar.

Blokus (x6)

Five plays across two days. I arrived back in California to find this
waiting for me in my Adam Spielt order. Two games with my kids later
  (6 and 8), I knew I had a hit. I then took it to a social gathering
of game developers (cf post-MUD-Dev conference BBQ) where it was
instantly latched onto and jealously grabbed and played all afternoon
and night, usually with a goodly crowd of people standing about
watching and commenting. At least five people carefully noted down
the name, URL, etc and said they'd order their own copies.

Me? I'm still working on that elusive goal of getting all of my
pieces placed in a 4 player game with non-novices. All I had left on
my last game was the 4-straight, and I know very exactly the mistake I
  made there... Bah!

Feurio!	(x3)

I'm not sure I like Greg's firebreak variant. I played all three
games with it, and only felt the urge to firebreak twice (both in the
same game). After 14 plays in the last two months, some of the shine
is wearing off. Happily I still like the core of the game.

Angela's March Gaming

I'm finally hitting my stride again after starting school...I've realized I
just can't live without gaming. It still seems like I don't do it much, but
I make every effort.

I played 50 games in the month of March, 6 of which were new to me. The new
entries are marked by the star.

//----------------------------
* proto -	1 play

Something about bulls mowing down hapless men and women dressed in white.
Amusing, but we were waaaaay too nice too each other. Anyone want to join
me in some nastiness of this sort at the Gathering-which-shant-be-named?

//----------------------------
* proto -	1 play

A beautiful and interesting game with the area of influence thing going for
it. Very enjoyable, and kept a 10-year old engaged quite well.

//----------------------------
*Ab Die Post!	1 play

Hmmmm. I've always heard this game reeks, and not because it lived in a
house with cigars. But I let myself listen to my pastor, the only one I
claim, and Pastor McFlufflin swore it's really quite entertaining. Needless
to say, I've lost my faith.

This may indeed be a fine game for ... Mmm ... 5 year olds. Much more than
that and it's just an exercise in playing with the little nifty randomizer

Gouwan Strike, and Gateball translations?

I know this is a stab in the dark, but anyone have these

Nothing official yet- hopefully later this year.

I'm just playing this one now. What does the DEFAUSSER DES PIECES
link mean, and what does it do? We couldn't understand the
Proposition and Voting screen that came up.

Re: [Classic Reviews]: Lord of the Rings, Union Pacific

Did your rules description omit the playing of one stock from hand face
down to start the game? I couldn't find that. Or maybe we're playing
wrong.

The rich have to get richer or they have no chance of holding onto
their territories. I really enjoy the cardplay in this one, but the
endgame has proved problematic. The original takes too long
and cheap wins seem too easy in the remake. We're still
looking for a happy medium.

And it was co-designed by our very own Brian Yu.

No, that's just how I view it as well.

Hansa Question

Just reading the Uberplay rules in my box.

Phase 3 says that a player may perform 1 action in the city that the
ship is in. If he would like to perform additional actions, he must
first move the ship to a different city.

From this wording, one could imply that if you somehow revisit a city
a second time in a turn, then you can perform 1 action there again.

But example 4 says "she has -- as required -- not performed more than
a single action in any one city" from which one could imply that you
can only perform 1 action in each city no matter how many times in a
turn you visit that city.

So, which is it???

Windopaene's games played for March

Games played report for the month of March, 2004

Not a very good month for me this month, with several missed Tuesday
nights at WizKids, and no extra sessions anywhere. Still, a couple of
meaty games in here.

Edel, Stein & Reich - 3 Plays
While it's still not my favorite blind bidding game, (that's probably
be Aladdin's Dragons), ES&R is moving right up there. Lots of arrgh
moments, and enough tactics to make it more than just guesswork. One
game was a player, in a 5 player game, take ALL FOUR gem majorities in
the second round, which was amazing.

Hera & Zues - 2 Plays
A couple of games with my son. Fun one I wish I could play more often.

Princes of the Renaissance - 2 Plays
Ah yes, the meat I referred to. Got in my first two plays of this,
(both 4 player). One game saw a runaway winner with 9 laurels, the
second was much closer, with the winner getting only four laurels, but
also getting tons of artists, and two of the 10 point city tiles. I
really want to try this with 5 or 6 and see how it plays.

Too Many Cooks - 2 Plays
Fun little trick-taking-with-a-twist game. No soup today is a bugger.

Age of Steam - 1 Play
My first play on the Southern England map. I had a great little loop
in the center, but eventually fell to someone with the NE all to
themselves. Still need to try Ireland.
