Starting tomorrow,

Youth Mentor Scheme

Weibin's excellent interview on the WESPA site makes some interesting
points regarding the youth Scrabble scene. I'll be the first to admit
that I haven't always been the most enthusiastic supporter of the WYSC
and related efforts, always having felt that those under 18s who were
going to reach the top echelons would do so with or without
youth-targeted efforts and that those who have started their
tournament lives in child-only events have rarely gone on to make much
of an appearance on the adult scene. That's not to say it's not a
noble thing to do, it's just not something I've seen produce future
World Champions as yet (but I'd happily be proven wrong). However
Weibin's observations appear to support the view that if young players
are ever going to compete against adults then they are better off
doing so from the very start:

"I think the most successful youth Scrabblers are those who step out
early and compete against stronger players, regardless of their age.
Some of the most successful examples include David Eldar, Ong Suanne,
Alastair Richards, Austin Shin and the recent WYSC Champion Anand
Bharadwaj who all started at a very young age against adult
competitors."

Anand Bharadwaj is noteworthy in this respect because it is widely
known that he received some tuition from Andrew Fisher (and others).
However aside from this one success story, Karen Richards and her
colleagues currently seem to shoulder much of the responsibility for
each player's personal development, an impossible task on a one-to-one
basis given their success in bringing such large numbers onboard.

So we have a large number of promising young players who would benefit
most of all from a bit of individual guidance, and a huge number of
WSC participants and other excellent players around the world who
could each spare a very small amount of time if asked. Could the WESPA
Youth Committee look at bringing the two groups together in some kind
of Youth Mentor Scheme?
