New fold up board and other tidbits - June09ad

Hello all,

Though I have not had a chance to update my website (where does the time
go?), I will now be offering my fold-up board in the same frosted dark blue
that I currently offer in a round acrylic. You can actually see the blue
fold-up board at www.adjudicator3000.com/boardraffle.html

The frosted blue board is slightly thicker (3/16") versus the black matte
fold-up (1/8"). However, I have made some engineering changes to the board
that will eventually make all my fold-up boards a bit lighter, and at the
same time making the fold-up board more rigid when assembled (no bend when
picked up at sides). Pricing will be the same as the black matte board and a
set of tile racks and tote bag will still be included.

I am suspending sales of the Adjudicator 3500 immediately due to a prolonged
parts shortage that I have been trying to overcome (with no luck). The 3000
model will be the only clock (for now), and it will be offered in black or
grey; and a padded bag is always included.

I am also ending the "2nd set of tile racks" promotion that has been going
for the last 7-8 months.

I will be in Dayton at the 2009 NSC and will be selling my boards and
clocks. As always, I normally do some kind of promotion at the NSC and this
year should also have one. I just haven't had a chance to think it through
yet.

Thank you to all who have purchased my products over the years. It has been
my pleasure to try to provide top notch products at reasonable prices.

Re: [world-scrabble] RE: Kings Cup final standings

The international division at Kings Cup is not just an international tournament. One of its main objects is to showcase top play for Thai school players. The final serves this objective far better than the 27 preliminary rounds because it is exhibited live on a giant board and accompanied by live commentary in Thai (and 'The Final Countdown' on loop).

The best seats for viewing the finals are reserved for the school-age prizewinners. The international players take any vantage point they can.

It goes without saying that a best of 3 final is not a useful way to determine the best player, but there are many other things going on here. The final is just one element of a very complex and wonderful event.

If you just want to know the best player, then you wouldn't bother announcing a winner at tournaments at all. You would simply modify the long-term ratings of all players at the end of each tournament, and the highest rated player would be the current best-guess at the current best-player.

The possibility of a less-than-best player getting up and winning a tournament is a big part of the excitement for most players. Just like getting the power tiles can enable an inferior player to win sometimes. I don't think you want to take away the bit that excites most people do you?

Also, a lot of excellent up-and-coming players find great motivation to be had in beating better players through a touch of serendipity, and this can spur them on to greater things - even though they realise they had luck on their side.

If you're only interested in determining the best player, you can always skip the awards ceremony, grab a copy of the latest ratings, and a hail a cab.

Some people may expect that. It doesn't follow that scrabble should go down the same path.

I surmise that in almost all cases of playoffs being used in sporting or gaming competitions, it's done for commercial reasons -
more games and extended, drawn-out playing seasons means more revenue for game owners, promoters, and advertisers. And the role of
sportswriters is to construct appropriate dramas for this stuff, for the consumption of the masses.

But it wouldn't take too much thought, on the part of the movers in these other sports, to create competition systems that more
accurately identify and reward the best performers in a given season or series. I'm arguing that should also be the goal for
organized scrabble competitions. Simply crowning the winner after a long series of X games may not have narrative excitement, but
it's much more accurate than introducing short playoffs or other gimmicks.

Correction: according to the web site for the tournament, Charnwit only had a lead of 4 games after the 27. That's still a
commanding lead. And if any extra weight should be given to head-on-head game results, Charnwit beat Pakorn in both their matches
in the series of 27 - only the addition of the tiny adjunct series of 3 games allowed Pakorn the chance to even their record for the
tournament. Yet, that tiny series was given all the weight, ignoring even Charnwit's 4-game lead in the long series.

WESPA rules update

The WESPA rules committee had originally hoped to finalise WESPA
rules by 30 June. Although we made good progress, some unforeseen
difficulties prevented us from meeting this target.

We hope the new WESPA rules will be used at this year's WSC and
Causeway Challenge. We are mindful that players at those events need
some time to acquaint themselves with the rules.

To this end, we plan to complete and circulate the final version of
the rules by July 31.

Regards,
Chris May
for the WESPA Rules Committee
