SmoothTiles Cool Contest3 + Clocks, Round Boards, Racks, Rugs, ...

Let me take this opportunity to congratulate the winners of the tough
Contest 1 and Contest 2. They are... drumroll please... Shelley Ubeika
and Tapani Lindgren who promptly joined me in donating the multiple
sets
of SmoothTiles won to Andrea Michaels whose friend is using those in
 Nepal now!

 http://www.samtimer.com/smoothtiles/contest1/answer/

Answer to Contest 2 was the list of 50 US states! :) Thanks everyone
for
 playing!

 Ok. Time for Contest 3:

 http://www.samtimer.com/smoothtiles/contest3/

This is a cool contest with user friendly shuffling of colorful
 SmoothTiles.

 1. Drag and Drop the tiles from the tile pool into the containers below
to come up with 5 scrabble players' names.

 2. Email the names to Sam Kantimathi: sam [at] samtimer [dot] com In
consideration to fellow members of this group, please do not post the
 answers publicly for a week.

First one to email me the rearranged SmoothTiles spelling out the five
intended scrabblers' name will win a nice prize.

ISC Ratings and Facebook

After a long hiatus, I connected to ISC.  The only thing I saw changed is that instead of having a bunch of 2000 rated players who only play rated games with each other, there was a bunch of 2300 rated players who only play rated games against each other.

I've long felt that their rating system is wrong in that it encourages this behaviour, rather than encouraging people to play with each other, and also being a truer reflection of rating ability.  One possibility would be to have a ceiling on rating or only allow incremental increases on wins but large falls on losses.  However, this would help the latter aim, but not the former one.

Another would be to allow rating points to be lost through inactivity.  In fact this could apply in national ratings as well - someone who achieves a certain rating is likely to have deteriorated anyway, through lack of match practice.  In the case of ISC, ratings should only hold if reinforced regularly by wins against people of a given range of rating, say within 500 points of you.

Anyway, these are just some ideas to shake things up a bit.

I notice a lot of people play on Facebook now - is it more fun than ISC?

No, it means you can dip into games as and when rather than commit to sitting at the PC for a whole game at a time. Facebook has more irritants - I'm going to have to avoid playing moves over 50 and winning games to prevent the worst of them! I'm not fussed about so-called ratings for ISC/Facebook - they mean nothing to me.
