TOKAI WORLD YOUTH SCRABBLE CHAMPIONSHIP 2007

Young players from all over the world are already flocking into Johor Bahru
for the "event of the year", which runs from Tuesday 4th to Thursday 6th.

Nearly half are playing in the Causeway Challenge prior to WYSC, and I have
had the pleasure of facing many of them across the board in the last few
days - fortunately for my ego, I am holdiing my own so far.

It is exciting to have the USA represented this year, for the firt time. I
believe that Tim Michaels will be right up there at the finish of WYSC -
given his performance to date in CC (his first Collins tournament).

Close to half the field are aged 17 this year (a higher percentage than
last year - I will do some stats if I find time) - Not sure what that
means, except that next year it will be a different lineup completely.
This makes WYSC much more dynamic than WSC. Of course, Suanne Ong will be
with us for a few more years, despite being the favourite now.

Full details of the event are on the website www.youthscrabble.org.
The International ratings shown on there will be updated after CC.

Of course it would be a higher percentage if Austin Shin, who is
currently aged 17, had been allowed to take part.

How you can allow some 17yr olds to enter but not another, on the absurd
grounds that the cut-off date is AFTER the event itself and he has
turned 18 by then, is totally beyond me.

Congratulations to the winner of the event in a few days time, who will
be the best under-18 Scrabble player in the world except for the one who
wasn't allowed to play. Doh.

Hm, that *does* seem like a bizarre exclusion.

Re: TOKAI WORLD YOUTH SCRABBLE CHAMPIONSHIP 2007

That's just a ridiculous exclusion.

Years ago in a "former life" as a ten pin bowler, I was involved with
the Junior Shield tournament - to qualify for that, bowlers had to be
under 18 years of age as at 01 January. Given the tournament was held
in *December* I found this quite a generous cutoff, e.g. for me, I was
17 on 01 January 1995, turned 18 on 12 March '95, and was allowed to
play the tournament in December '95 as a qualified junior.

I can't understand why someone who is 17 during the tournament can't be
considered a Youth player either. I agree Stewart, it is absurd. A
more inclusive cutoff would have been under 18 at 30 June 2007; a strict
one, under 18 at 02/03 December 2007.

What if a player has a birthday on, e.g. Christmas Day 2007 and turns
18. He/she will have played all his/her Scrabble during 2007 *as a
junior* but because of this rule, he/she is ineligible. In which case,
a better rule would be that the player has to have played a minimum of
50% of his/her tournament Scrabble in the calendar year as a
minor/junior. If it was me in the above, my birthday in March meant I
played over 70% of the year as an adult, therefore by December I'm
ineligible. (If it was in May, I'd have played just 40% as an adult, so
I'd be eligible.)

That is the case here - Austin's birthday is 8th December. That's after
the event finishes. Two more things make this more irritating:

1) One of the points made in one of Karen's long scrolls about WYSC was
that it could be moved to the summer if it is held in Western countries,
to avoid it being too cold. Since the WYSC committee is totally
intransigent on the 31st December rule and won't consider changing it to
something more sensible (like, a cut-off date BEFORE the event!), any
move to the summer will of course make the problem much worse.

2) One of Karen's emails referred to some players and/or their parents
"begging for the age limit to be raised so that they could have another
go". What was actually being asked was that a 17yr old was allowed to
play in an under 18s event. Not quite the same thing, is it?

Contrary to how it may seem I do support the idea of a WYSC (albeit
biennially). Some UK players are keen for it to be held in London next
year and if it is then I will very happily help out. It would be good to
see it move around the world a bit more after being in Australia and
Malaysia.

However if this event is able to earn any of the integrity which Karen's
emails are trying to make us believe it already has, stupid and unfair
decisions like this one need to be sorted out without further delay. In
my view, excluding one of last year's finalists in this way has already

RE: TOKAI WORLD YOUTH SCRABBLE CHAMPIONSHIP 2007

I agree it's a shame that Austin wasn't allowed to play.

Nevertheless, I think that Karen's initiative in starting this
Championship is highly commendable. I also want to wish England's rep
-Annie Hawes a lot of luck and to recommend that you follow the
Championships, which begins tomorrow, at
http://www.youthscrabble.org/wysc2007/

Suanne Ong, Malaysia who is just 15 will start favourite after her 12th
position (top female) in the WSC but Liew Kian Boon from Singapore
finished above her in 7th position at the Causeway Challenge. I think
the Singaporeans are a coming power in World Scrabble, as witness their
winning performance at the Causeway Challenge.

Re: Aggressive, smelly bridge players

Stewart and all--

This post brings to mind the coverage of an early Oakland tournament by a reporter from a neighborhood
newspaper. One of the players had acted violently toward a player at a club (not a tournament) in another
state and had been banned from the club and the tournaments that received donations from the club. Somehow
the reporter learned of this, and it became the focus of his story!

I remember that Joe Edley was extremely annoyed at this type of coverage--quite understandable. I mailed
him a copy of the story, and he remonstrated somehow with the paper. Certainly no intellectual activity
needs this type of coverage.
