New funding sources? (was Re: WORLD YOUTH SCRABBLE CHAMPIONSHIP 2007)

Yes, this is exactly what ESPN has already done. They televised the
finals of the (adult) U.S. nationals each year from 2004-2006, but
the ratings weren't good, so they tossed that overboard and decided
to televise the American school scrabble championships this year
instead. I do not at all think this is a good development for
Scrabble in North America. The level of play at the WYSC has been
disparaged by some here, but it's light years ahead of what ESPN
showed this year. Our school scrabble is what the WYSC would be if
you barred the high school kids from competing. And the low end of
the school scrabble field consists largely of defenseless eight-year-
olds. The early rounds of the event appear to be a contest to see
how big a point margin the few decent teams (the kids play in pairs)
can run up by playing phoney after phoney against cowed little kids
who can barely read yet. (The event uses double challenge, same as
adult North American tournaments.) I guess this is what Hasbro and
the NSA want.

I suppose there's not much to be done; ESPN's in the ratings
business, and if audiences would rather watch the game being played
rather badly by cute elementary schoolers than watch it played well
by adults, then that's just how it is. I thought it was
disheartening to see Hasbro and the NSA cheerfully assent to dumping
major-league scrabble for little-league scrabble, though.

Re: WSC Players Ceiling Set at 150

Thanks for this, Roy, very interesting.

Personally I find it interesting that the study appears to be advocating
allocating places to countries partly based on volume of players. I think
allocating places solely on ability would be better. Would be interested to
hear what others think.

Re: WSC Players Ceiling Set at 150

I'm with Martin here. Ability should count more than numbers. I don't know how many players Romania had now
but I reckon we could easily get 51 in order to grab the second spot:) I love the idea of havin' wild cards as
well. After all, the best players should be there.
  Cheers

I too agree with Ed, and have advocated for many years extending the
existing bye for the defending champion to any player who finishes
in the top quarter of the last WSC, with the added byes to be counted
against national quotas.

Re: WSC Players Ceiling Set at 150

Hi,
Just a short note to correct any possible misapprehension
created by Roy Kietzman's post.

Roy writes:
> Philip wants the playing corps capped to figure not far from
that > of the last global event. The three-member Wespa committee

First of all I think it would be fair to say that
the three-member Wespa committe agrees on very little :-)
Of course, that's the way it should be, so we get
a complete range of ideas from which Mattel/Philip Nelkon
can choose it's method of allocating
the 2009 WSC members.
The tourney and prize fund are, after all, fully funded by Mattel,
even if players' expenses are not.
There is nothing at all official or binding about
the report which Roy forwarded.
The report was simply a number of ideas.
Rest assured that the ceiling is *not* 150.
It will be somewhere around 110.
Of course that would have to be raised
at some point in the distant future
if English scrabble continues to spread
to many more of the world's countries.

Mattel/Philip/Wespa have
