Horrific news from Graeme Thomas's brother Steve below.

Graeme was involved in a fatal road traffic accident at approximately 01:30
this morning (4th November 2006). His car--apparently the only one
involved--ran off the road into a tree, a couple of miles from his home in Hatfield.
He's yet to be formally identified, though there seems little doubt that it's
him.

I'll pass on further news as it becomes available.

How awful to hear this. What is happening in our happy little Scrabble

Graeme Thomas

Steve and all--

It was a great shock to read of Graeme's passing. He was the first British player I knew, and the one I knew best
and was cedrtainly the most fond of. His wit and gentle humor--even when there was some bite to it--were
delightful to hear. As an example, for any who did not know him, he wrote, with characteristic irony, when
the British Scrabble Association was sued (unfortunately successfully) out of spite by a player, that he
had never joined the association, which saved its leadership from the burden of deciding whether or not to
expel him. Since Graeme was the Association president at the time another dimension was added to the remark.

In addition, Graeme had the most exaustive vocabulary of any person I've ever known, and he used it
exceedingly well. I will miss him enormously. My heart goes out to you, Steve, and any other family he may have.

Re: Graeme Thomas

Dear UK-S and SOWPODS netizens:

The reason I know (of) many of you is this wonderful pair of email
lists set up by Graeme Thomas several years ago. How awful it is to be
discussing his untimely passing on this very list!

Like all who have expressed their thoughts about Graeme, I will miss
him, his words and his wit greatly. When Graeme weighed in on a
Scrabble or language related issue on these lists, he often provided a
much-needed logical, dispassionate and knowledgeable viewpoint. It was
a joy to exchange emails with him on a number of topics. He was a
rarity amongst tournament Scrabblers in that the knew the words he
played not just as letter strings of high probability but as items from
his vast vocabulary that he could use with facility in conversation or
writing. Indeed, I shall forever be reminded of Graeme whenever I
encounter PEEN/PEIN, BOTONEE or GOMBEEN, to name just a few examples.

It is no exaggeration to say that Graeme enriched my life. My sincere
condolences to Steve and the rest of Graeme's family.

Fwd: The passing of a legend

This is Albert Hahn, just forwarding Sherrie's
thoughts about Graeme.
Sherrie maintains our list and directs tourneys over here.
She's on the sowpods list but was so
distressed she just forgot to cc it.

He quietly read me Steve's message to the uk-scrabble mailing list. I
was then, and have been all day, just totally devestated by this
news.
It was all I could to do to let John go so he could call a few select
others in the Graeme Thomas fan club of North America. I just wanted
to stay on the phone all day, long distance, to cry with John over
this terrible terrible news.

I adored Graeme Thomas. I totally loved this guy. Full of anecdotes
about everything from popular culture to Olde English. He visited our
home in Manchester-by-the-Sea many times on his U.S. trips. I was
always honored to be among the folks with whom he stayed. One trip,
he
rolled into the driveway driving a minivan. He was just astounded by
its size. The rental company was out of cars and for the same fee,
they were permitting him a twoish-week rental on this van instead. On
