Zyzzyva iOS app on sale for USD $0.99, limited time! [ad May 2013]

I've just lowered the price of the Zyzzyva iOS app from USD $4.99 to
$0.99! This is a special price for a limited time only. If you've been
holding out to buy it, please get your copy now and tell your friends!
Here's a convenient link to Zyzzyva in the iTunes Store:

http://bit.ly/ZyzzyvaApp

The above link may only go to the U.S. store; I'm not sure. If so,
just search for "Zyzzyva" in iTunes and you'll find it.

I also submitted an update to Apple last night, so expect some nice
improvements in the very near future. Here is the list of what will be
new in version 2.1.0:

• Landscape orientation.
• Faster, more reliable Dropbox sync.
• Automatic Dropbox sync when entering or exiting the app.
• Swipe to navigate between quiz questions.
• Store and navigate quizzes in folders.
• Pinch and zoom to change font size.
• Much nicer icons throughout the app.
• Convenient link to write a glowing App Store review.
• Lots of bug fixes and usability improvements!

Thanks, and happy studying!

Mike

2013 National SCRABBLE Championship (USA)

Some important deadline dates are approaching for the 2013 National SCRABBLE
Championship in Las Vegas.

Please remember that the entry fee increases by $50 after May 31, 2013.
Enter now and save!

Also, please note that t-shirt orders cannot be guaranteed after June 15,
2013. If you wish to order an NSC t-shirt with your entry, please be sure
to submit your entry by June 15. You may also order additional t-shirts on
or before that date - contact nsc@... with sizes and
quantities if you would like to do so. After June 15, orders will be
subject to availability. We will order a small number of additional
t-shirts to have on hand at the NSC, but there will be no second order this
year, so don't delay.

The tournament is closing in on 350 entrants, with 341 signed up as of this
writing. We are expecting a great turnout, and encourage you to be part of
the action.

Because a staff member needed to withdraw, we have an opening on staff for a
Division Assistant. If you, or someone you know, are interested in the
position, please contact the Championship Committee at
nsc@...

Also, we still need a number of challenge computers during the tournament,
and volunteers to help with setup on Thursday, registration on Friday, and
tear down on Wednesday afternoon. Those volunteering in any of these ways
receive a free NSC t-shirt if they sign on to help by June 15. If you can
help out, please contact the committee at nsc@...

Malta Scrabble Internationals 2013 - Call for Feedback

As announced in my address during the prize-giving ceremony of the 6th MISO
last Monday, the organisers would like to receive feedback about the two
tournaments from all those who took part in either tournament. To this end,
I am pasting the url to an online feedback form which only takes a few
minutes to fill in. Here is the url:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1-ezSejPPLlq0bE2zRAeirZfMsign6dlJ8YB3GIoaFMQ/viewform

The feedback form is addressed also to those amongst you who at some point
might have considered entering the tournaments but then decided not to.
Responses from these ladies and gentlemen would be much appreciated.

The ultimate aim of this exercise is to improve the organisation of next
year's events, details of which will be finalised and published in the
coming weeks.

While thanking you in advance for responding to our call for feedback, I
would like to reiterate my heartfelt thanks to all those who animated the
Malta Internationals through their verve and participation, and to all
those who were involved in its organisation, namely John Chew (Technical
Director), Amy Byrne (Tournament Director) and the administration of the
Club, particularly David Delicata whose work before, during and after the
events was remarkable for its sheer quality and quantity.

Best regards

Late June- 4th of July weekend Mind Sports International (MSI) Las Vegas scrabble tournament NASPA

Some players complain there is hardly any Corporate sponsorship of
tournament players. Here's LiLi, via MSI, testing the waters in USA for
scrabble. In Las Vegas. In the incredibly huge and fabulous Venetian Hotel.
Affordable entry fee. No hotel-stay requirement. No Commuter fee... Why not
support them?

You get a chance to play in the $40,000 Smart Board!

You get free set of commemorative Vegas themed tiles and a tilebag, and
entered into a draw to win a nearly 7-foot square SCRABBLE rug -- if you
register in May (10 days left).

What the hell are you waiting for? :)

Enrol today:

New York, ...

For the benefit of those traveling over 15,000 miles round trip (25000 km)
to compete in this landmark event of 16 games, I have arranged seven
one-day tournaments over seven days to offer them a total of 49+16 games on
this trip:

WESPA ratings

There have been some questions lately about updates to WESPA ratings. The super Aardvark tool, which was
done by Edward Okulicz, is only updated from time to time on a voluntary basis, and we are in the process of
recruiting more volunteers.

Meanwhile, more up to date ratings can be found on the ratings file link on our ratings page, which is copied here:

Kings Cup - Sudoku

If you know anyone who loves Sudoku, please pass this on.
It will basically be the same days as Kings Cup - ie Thursday 11th to
Sunday 14th July

It is also not too late to enter Kings Cup, one of the most exciting
tournaments in the world (certainly the biggest, with around 10,000 players
competing in various games - and around 6,000 of them are children, the
future of our wonderful game)

If you are aged 55 or over, also remember my "Evergreens" tournament, on
9th July

Full details of Kings Cup are on WESPA tournament calendar at www.wespa.org

Any front hook for RABBIT? + Dan Feyer, the Nigel of Crosswords

I remember being surprised that decades long Internet
urban legend "Crabbit Old Woman" had not elevated
crabbit to even # status, but that changed at the last update
of Collins. CRABBIT# now joins FRABBIT# as the
only front hooks of rabbit. Here's that great poem falsely attributed
to a deceased patient of a nursing home. It was actually
written by a nurse. It has recently had another wrinkle added
as it's going around the Internet with a new title, attributed to
a deceased male patient.
Here is "A Crabbit Old Woman"
What do you see nurses, what do you see?
Are you thinking when you are looking at me-

A crabbit old woman, not very wise,
Uncertain of habbit, with far-away eyes,
Who dribbles her food and makes no reply
When you say in a loud voice - "I do wish you d try."
Who seems not to notice the things that you do,
And forever is losing a stocking or shoe.
Who unresisting or not, lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding, the long day to fill.
Is that what you are thinking, is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse, you're not looking at me.

I'll tell you who I am as I sit here so still;
As I use at your bidding, as I eat at your will,
I'm a small child of ten with a father and mother,
Brother and sisters, who love one another.
A young girl of sixteen with wings on her feet,
Dreaming that soon now a lover she'll meet;
