Session Report 08/06/07
I didn't attend the session of 7/30, so there will be no session
report for that week. In the meantime ...

(due to it being party-game night, newbie designations are dropped)
Despite the absence of a few regulars, there was a record turnout
tonight, both in first-time attendees (6), long-absent returnees (4),
and number of gamers (FIFTY-SEVEN, plus baby Claudia). In between,
we had a huge birthday cake (thanks to Bridgit) and a group photo
(thanks to Jeremiah for taking it!) Thanks to everyone for coming out!
New to the group were:
- Ammen-Ra, Randy's friend
- Kristina, Steve's sister
- Michael Roberts, in town for 2 weeks for a boardgaming convention
- Shelli, who works at PARC and found our group online
- Kendra, Eric's friend
- Greg Suhr, Aya's boyfriend
Previosly frequent gamers returning after a long absence were:
- Eron, who co-founded this group along with me and Randy
- Cassi, Randy's daughter who had recently moved to college
- Aya, who acquired a boyfriend
- Dirk, who has been busy with life!
The theme of the night was PARTY GAMES, and plenty of people
participated! For the first time, we played party classics such as
Scattergories, Apples to Apples, and Chronology. But, what would a
party be without...
--- Werewolf ---
GOOD
----
Seer (each night, can determine werewolf status of one player) : Nick
Magician (may heal one victim and poison one player once per game) : Tom
Hunter (may retaliate upon death) : Ammen-Ra
Bodyguard (may protect a different player from death each turn) : Chip
Masons (know that each other is a villager) : Janice and Cameron
NEUTRAL
-------
Cobbler (wins only if killed) : Kristina
Dwarf (wins when his enemy is killed before him) : Jeremy
Dwarf Enemy: Selvin
Cursed (becomes werewolf when eaten): Cheryl
EVIL
----
Werewolves: Eugene, Greg, Chris, Steve
Sorcerer (each night, can determine seer status of one player) : Thomas
In the first day, everyone made their introduction as "I'm a
villager" so Cheryl decided to say "I'm a werewolf!". She was quickly
lynched by the suspicious villagers, and her curse failed to activate.
The werewolves then ate Selvin, greatly pleasing Dwarf Jeremy, who had
picked Selvin as his mortal enemy. Jeremy was now assured of victory no
matter what happened.
On the second day, Nick the Seer began strategizing loudly, as to do
otherwise would draw untold suspicion upon him given his past history.
After the crowd strung up Ammen-Ra, the wolves tried to feast on Nick,
but Magician Tom used his power over death to save him.
Things got better for the villagers when Dr. Remus Lupin (Steve) was
nominated by Nick (who had divined Steve's wolfish nature at night) and
seconded enthusiastically by Angie. The village lynched Lupin and he
amazingly turned out to be a werewolf! The wolves then ate Angie,
thinking that she was the Seer.
More accusations were made, including Eron on me, who claimed I had
voted to lynch several of the previous innocents. I stoutly denied the
accusations by pointing out that Eron had misremembered, supported by
both Tom, Thomas, and Nick, who all remembered that I had not voted to
lynch a single player yet. Someone then nominated Eron and we lynched
him. The wolves then ate Seer Nick, while Magician Tom poisoned
Bodyguard Chip.
After the next day, when Maria was eaten, Cameron accused me of being a
werewolf, seconded by Janice. Their rationale was that all the
experienced players except me and Greg seemed to be dying off, so we
ought to be werewolves. (This was true.) But the group barely voted to
save me after I explained my actions. We lynched the lynch-happy Cassi
instead, but she proved to be yet another villager. The wolves then ate
Cameron, raising even more suspicions that I might be a werewolf. I
pointed out how silly it would be for me as werewolf to eat Cameron
after Cameron had been so vocal in pointing me out. Janice still
nominated me anyway, and I quickly nominated Kristina for being too
quiet, seconded by Tom. Kristina gave no defense, so we all voted to
kill her. Kristina surprisingly voted against herself, showing that she
was the Cobbler. The wolves then ate Spencer, leaving just 7 players:
Janice and Tom (good) Jeremy (apathetic) Chris, Greg, Eugene (wolves)
and Thomas (on the wolf side). Not surprisingly, with a significant
majority not interested in lynching anyone, the village was unable to
come to an agreement on who to lynch, so the wolves, Thomas (Sorcerer),
Jeremy (Dwarf), and Kristina (Cobbler) won!
--- Age of Steam: Puerto Rico ---
In a group first, the first solitaire game was played, by Devin, on
Ted's recently designed solitaire map for Age of Steam. Unfortunately
for Devin, he also participated in another group first: losing (solo)
to a non-human opponent. That Devin sure knows how to party...

--- Buffy the Vampire Slayer ---
Dirk writes:
In Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The good players got off to an early lead
by an all-out assault on Faith, who was vainly searching for the
artifact the Mayor needed. They managed to kill her before she could
locate the artifact, and without taking any harm themselves. Willow
also immediately found the spell that the good side needed in order to
destroy the artifact when they located it. Things were looking very bad
for Bad. However, as often happens in this game, things can turn around
very quickly: the Mayor's forces attacked by surprise, and one of his
minions carrying another powerful artifact managed to bite Buffy and
turn her into a vampire herself, thus restoring a slayer to the evil
side. That minion and Buffy quickly caught Xander and slew him, leaving
only two remaining good characters. Things were looking very bad for
Good. However, since Willow still had the necessary spell, and boots of
running to evade the evil minions, she was able to avoid Xander's fate
until Oz located the dreaded Box of Garvok that the Mayor desperately
needed. Now Willow and Oz merely needed to meet up and cast the spell.
The Mayor's only hope was to block them, and he would have, but sunrise
was minutes away and all of his minions (including Buffy) headed for
shelter until it passed. Peering from doorways, they watched helplessly
as Oz passed Willow the box. There was a chance, however slim, that
touching the box could have killed Willow, but it didn't. And there was
a chance, however slim, that the spell would fail, but it didn't. The
Mayor screamed in anguish, as his planned ascension to demon form
became impossible. So Xander was dead, and Buffy was Undead,
but Good had triumphed once again.
--- Fist of Dragonstones ---
Marcus writes:
John B. and Dirk quickly became enemies, tying the initial bid for the
Gnome (2 real gold, 2 silver). Dirk attempted a diplomatic solution,
which John flatly refused, and they both then proceeded to each bet all
their silver for the tie-break, in essence losing about half their
bidding for the round, and all their silver for the game, with neither
of them actually winning the card.
After that, I immediately became a target, given my random 4 starting
stones included 3 yellow and one red, putting me one short of being able
of using the sorcerer and getting 2 out of the 3 points necessary to
win. As a result, Selvin quickly purchased the thief and stole one of
my yellows for the betterment of the rest of the players. The Fairy
(one permanent fairy gold) was also in the first round, and Ra and I
saved up our bidding for that. I bid 8/9 fairy gold, and Rah bid 11 (9
fairy gold and 2 real gold), effectively eliminating me from getting
anything for the first round.
In the next round, Selvin apparently enjoyed using the Witch's curse
token to hold over every auction, but saving it for the last round which
happened to be the two headed dragon (2 dragon stones), again
eliminating me from any progress. In another round, Ra won the bid for
the Rainbow Dragon, which let him choose a color and randomly choose
from the bag. If the stone was not of that color he chose, he gets to
keep all stones collected if he stops. If he continues, and eventually
draws the color he initially chose, all stones would be lost. Given
almost all the yellow stones were out in players collections, he chose
that color, and was able to get 3 stones for a relatively small bid
amount of 4-5 fairy gold.
For the next few rounds, everyone was able to get at least one point,
and collect a few stones, except for me, who still had 0 points and
fewer dragon stones than I started with. Selvin, through bidding on
single dragon stone auctions for cheap (1-2 fairy gold), progressed up
to 2 points, and had 2 out of 3 dragon stones to get the last point,
so everyone targetted him. During the last round, I was able to save up
4 yellow and 2 red stones. John B. won the curse token, and seemed
eager to use it against Selvin, who was in the lead with 2 points and 2
stones. After winning the Sorcerer's Apprentice card relatively cheaply
(for 2 fairy gold), since the competition was low for that auction, I
only needed the Sorcerer to win, but Selvin, and others believed John
would curse the Sorcerer card (4 stones of 1 color for 2 points).
However, during the Ghost card auction (choose any previous card played
that round and claim that reward), I baited John, saying there's no way
he'd use the curse for the Ghost, which seemed to help, and he used the
curse token. Since no one had enough fairy gold to block me from the
upcoming Sorcerer auction, I took that auction, and ended up winning the
game.
