18xx <at> Kublacon

18xx and rail games in general were well attended at Kublacon this
year (www.kublacon.com) and I was the lucky (maybe some skill) winner
of the 18xx Puffing Billy tourney. I played 2 games of 1870, one 1830
and one non-tourney 2038. Many games of Ticket to ride were played, I
think one event had 25 players. Hell Rail, Streetcar, Silverton, Iron
Dragon, and several other crayon games were played as well. I had fun
but didn't get a chance to try 18Scan or 18US. Hopefully at the next
Bay Area games day they'll get played.

AW: July 2th: 3rd round of the Belgian Championship: Brussels (Anderlecht)

Hi Fred,

I would be glad to visit you but unfortunately I will not have any time in
July. But if possible I will visit you before November.

Thank you for the invitation. I will tell it to Alfred and Daniel although I
doubt that they would come.

Cheers

Michael

Oooops! Of course, I meant "from 11:00 AM" (not pm !).

The rest does not change.

Updated 18Scan files are now available

Many thanks to those who contributed to the revised version, and a special
thanks to Steve Thomas for his heroic efforts.

Sevareid's Law: "The chief cause of problems is solutions." Inexorably in
the course of making changes to the product, I will have induced additional
errors, ambiguities, and general infelicities. Please do not hesitate to
bring these to my attention.

Please note that the only changes to the map are cosmetic: notably the
change of axis for the grid system. The other components have also been
revised to match. However, all but the most compulsive will be satisfied
with the new rules and (possibly) the new map: these have been placed into a
separate upgrade file for downloading. The other revised components have
been slipstreamed into the basic package.

Re: Updated 18Scan files are now available

In our playing today, we were confused as to why the relationship
between hexes and their allowed tile placements/upgrades wasn't
clearer. The Copenhagen tiles are marked COP, making that clear, and
many of the tiles are marked Y, but no map spaces are correspondingly
marked. Is there a reason for this?

It's basically a spot of confusion about just what the right markings are.
Oslo and Helsinki take an unmarked tile in yellow, and Y tiles in green and
brown. It is at least arguable that these hexes should be marked Y, though the
danger there is that players will search (in vain) for yellow Y tiles. Too,
there's the problem that by the time the Y marking becomes germane, it's covered
by a #5 tile. The same problem exists in other designs: 1870's P cities take
unmarked tiles in yellow and green, and David's own 18VA
steals^Wcopies^Wadapts^Wpays homage to this design wart.

Stockholm is easier; it's preprinted in yellow, and takes Y tiles in green
and brown, and no confusion would be caused by marking it Y.

There's a table in the rules (yes, if all else fails, read the rules) which
makes all clear. Until the most recent release (which I have yet to download)
it implied that these three Y cities were marked OSL, HEL, and STO on the map,
and the fact that they weren't constituted part of my critique. Marking them
in this way might reduce confusion. Marking the Y tiles this way too might
also help, though it would rekindle the debate about whether new labels on
tiles is sufficient reason for new numbers, and that's a fate well worth avoiding.
