DriveThruRPG's Customers Donate $178,900.00 to Doctors Without Borders for
Haiti Relief

(Atlanta, GA) – DriveThruRPG, an online marketplace for traditional
dice-and-paper roleplaying games, recently conducted a fund-raising program
in the wake of the devastating earthquake that affected Haiti. The effort
resulted in an amount of $178,900.00 being wired to the international relief
organization, Doctors Without Borders.

"Nothing like this has ever happened in our community," said Sean Patrick
Fannon, Marketing Manager for DriveThruRPG. "The response of the publishers
and the gaming community has been nothing short of miraculous. I am
extremely proud of what we've all done here. It can't take away the misery
and tragedy faced by the people of Haiti, but we are hopeful that our
efforts can bring some relief and recovery to them."

DriveThruRPG chose Doctors Without Borders because of their flawless
reputation for bringing medical and humanitarian aid to those in need
without any partisan or philosophical agenda attached. Already on the ground
when the earthquake struck, Doctors Without Borders is perfectly positioned
to make immediate and efficient use of the funds collected.

"We are extremely grateful to DriveThruRPG and the roleplaying game
community for choosing to contribute to Doctors Without Borders. Their
generosity will help provide lifesaving and urgently needed humanitarian
assistance to the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti," said Jennifer
Tierney, Director of Development for Doctors Without Borders-USA. "As
Doctors Without Borders provides surgery for victims of the earthquake, as
well as post-operative care, mental health support, and other medical care,
this contribution will make a real difference in Haiti."

Reports from Doctors Without Borders indicate that over 11,000 have been
treated by them, with over 1,300 surgeries performed (most of them major).
The money donated by DriveThruRPG will go directly to helping rebuild their
supplies and expanding their operations during the recovery of the Haitian
nation.

"This is just the beginning," said Steve Wieck, CEOof DriveThruRPG. "We've
tapped into a real power for positive social change and charitable good
here, and we're looking ahead to future opportunities to use our technology
to help game publishers and game fans network to provide assistance to those
in need."

To be fair, there was more than $20 worth of good stuff in there. And a whole pile of rubbish. :) But yeah, not a bad total at all! B. ------------------------------------

Charity Game: Wounds = Cash Bucks

Hi everyone,

While reading through some RPG design blogs, I came across an idea for
a *charity
*roleplaying event that we could collectively organise for one or more of
the Irish gaming conventions.

Everyone comes to the table with €X. Every time somebody takes a wound, they
actually have to *pay *for it. E.g. "Your leg gets shot off, that's €3." I'd
like to run it with Hell for Leather<http://cobwebgames.com/index.php/games/>,
but I think it would work with any system. You're all creative people. Any
ideas how we could make this work/fun/happen?

Sebastian.

Paying for wounds seems counter-productive - you *want* players to be throwing away money, not avoiding situations where they spend it. Paying for rerolls and in-game benefits, though... Gar [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------------------

Re: Charity Game: Wounds = Cash Bucks

This is actually a really good idea but in terms of wounds depending on the
system - €3 might be excessive - such as in Scion or Star Wars......you'd
have to set up a direct debt or something XDXD or just bring your cheque
book XD

To Gar:

I was imagining a gory game of self sacrifice and martyrdom, but yes, you're
probably right. Most gamers would prefer to buy bonuses for the game instead
of wounds for themselves.

To Alex:
I hear you.

To all:

Any ideas which system would work best? The advantage of using an indie game
means no one has to write a scenario for it (as most indie games these days
are light on prep), the disadvantage of an indie game is that most players
would have to learn it new.

There's a few indie games or storygames that already have a mechanic like that could work. I'm thinking of fanmail in Primetime Adventures, or gift dice in The Shadow of Yesterday - http://tsoy.crngames.com/The_Gift_of_Dice. The clarity some of these designs have would make the experience fair. So I wouldn't use a game where the GM is free to throw any obstacle at the players - I'd want one where no-one at the table could (or would need to) fudge, but where _everyone_ at the table could buy an extra dice for charity. GM included. Or I'd use a GMless game like Contenders, Universalis or Hell for Leather. Joe. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------------------

Re: Charity Game: Wounds = Cash Bucks

Hey Joe,

Your link had an extra "." at the end. Fixed:
http://tsoy.crngames.com/The_Gift_of_Dice

Seamus, I can see how Paranoia would be fun, but I'd be cautious about
giving the GM too much power. Essentially, it should be up to the players
how much money they give to charity. So, I'm leaning to the indie game
option, or even just a mod for an existing game.

James, I'm not sure how complex the management of a charity draft would be.
I'm not a bloodbowl player, so I'd need some help to organise something like
that. I think I'd prefer to operate within my own sphere (roleplaying)
unless I could get some reliable help.

Who's the best person to talk to about arranging this event for Gaelcon?

Sebastian.

Fergal Fitzpatrick for Special Events, Boomer or Sarky for RPGs. Don't have any better contact information than that though I'm afraid! Shane -- -- I found out, long ago It's a long way down the holiday road ------------------------------------
