Dispatches Scenario Design Contest & Article Contest

Hello everyone at the Main ASL Mailing List, Vic from Dispatches from the Bunker here. My
subscribers already know about the 2 contests we are starting for the Newsletter
but also wanted the general ASL public to have a shot at these as well. So read
below and I Thank everyone who participates, Vic.
The First contest is a Scenario Design Contest. Here are the parameters
for the scenario we are looking for: ETO, France 1940, a company of Infantry or
so for both sides (8 - 12 squads), Armour for both sides (3 to 6 AFVs),
Meeting Engagement preferred or if one side is the attacker and the other the
defender, Victory Conditions or Reinforcements which allow and/or force both
sides to attack and defend. Game length of 5 or 6 turns, 2 or 3 newer Boards
that number in the 50s or 60s or lower case letters from the starter kits or
from Decade of War. We want rural terrain, a village is OK, city terrain is
not. The result should be a tourney style action with excellent re-playability.
The scenario submission deadline is when Issue #35 is published in September
2012, giving participants a full year to design, develop and playtest their
scenario. The Bunker Crew will at that point sort through the submissions and
play what we consider the two or three best, the winner will be announced in
Issue #36 with the publication of the scenario and will earn a four issue
subscription. Please e-mail me your submissions as a text or WORD.doc, no pdf.
files, Please. Any of the runner-up scenarios may be published down the line
earning a free copy of that issue.

The second contest is for a two page article in 9 or 10 pt Times
New Roman font on any ASL subject that deals with an aspect of game play that
has not been overly analyzed through the years. The deadline for this contest
is Issue #34, which gives you six months to come up with something that will be
of value to the greater ASL Community. The winner again will receive a four
issue subscription and any other articles that we receive might be published in
future issues, in those cases a Free copy of the issue it is published in is
your compensation. I look forward to your participation and may the best

quick rules Q. - pinned squad defence CCV

Hello list,

Hope this isn't a silly question, my playing partner and I were unable
to resolve it tonight.

A pinned squad (pinned by 6 roll on PF attempt) survived vehicular
overrun, vehicle stayed in squad's hex. An enemy half-squad moved in to
reinforce CC / escort vehicle. My squad chose to attack the half-squad
in CCPh and eliminated it. Vehicle (CCV 4) then attacked my squad,
rolled a 5.

According to my opponent, because my squad is pinned its CCV is at -1
ie. 4, so attack was at 1-1 and my squad is casualty reduced. According
to me, because halved FP applies only to attack by pinned squads and not
to defence, there is no -1 mod on defence so my CCV for defence is 5 and
attack was therefore at 4-5 ie. 1-2, and my squad is unaffected.

QRDC clearly gives the -1 mod as applicable to halved FP (which I argue
is not applicable in this instance since I'm defending) not to pinned
unit per se.

Neither of us could find any specific mention of this situation in the
rules.

Any opinions very welcome - rules citations would be most helpful also.
Hope we haven't missed something bleedin' obvious ...

thanks in advance for help

Ros

Re: quick rules Q. - pinned squad defence CCV

I thought you were correct, but the *Close Combat comprehensive Example* says
otherwise:

Being Fanatic, the 5-4-8 in J4 is exempt from PAATC when it Advances into I5
and attacks the T34/85 in sequential CC using Street Fighting. The German
makes an ATMM check and rolls an Original 6, pinning the 5-4-8 and reducing
its CCV to 4. DRM are -2 (-1 Street Fighting Ambush, -1 CE). The German then
rolls an Original CC DR of 12 resulting in Casualty Reduction from Crew
Small Arms (11.621 <http://private.texas-asl.com/eASLRB/A/A11.HTM#11621>). The
T34/85 attacks with its CMG vs the CCV of the surviving, pinned 2-3-8 HS at
2:1 odds (4 FP:2 CCV [3 CCV -1 pinned]) with +1 DRM for Street Fighting
Ambush. The Original CC DR of 9 has no effect Since the 2-3-8 is pinned, it
cannot return to its building Location and is locked in Melee with the
vehicle.
