Possible virus in emacs-23.4-bin-i386.zip (hexl.exe, sorted-doc.exe, digest-doc.exe)

Hi,

I've just seen that a new emacs version is about to be released. I've
downloaded

http://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/emacs/windows/emacs-23.4-barebin-i386.zip

last modified 29-Jan-2012 19:50

http://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/emacs/windows/emacs-23.4-bin-i386.zip

and tried to unpack it on my Windows 7 system. At home, my antivirus
solution Bitdefender 2012 alarmed me about the Gen:Variant.Graftor.11514
virus in the three files

bin/hexl.exe
bin/sorted-doc.exe
bin/digest-doc.exe

Then I've uploaded the small (3.4 MB) binary file
emacs-23.4-barebin-i386.zip to VirusTotal. Here I received 13 (from
total 43) virus messages with virus names

Artemis!4749CC4C3512
TR/Graftor.11514.13
Trojan-Downloader.win32.Agent.bmzd
Trojan.Win32.Siscos!IK

etc.

I also had the problem with libxpm.

installing GnuTLS

I'm trying to get Gnus set up on my windows machine and I'm having
trouble getting GnuTLS installed (much simpler on my other machines, of
course).

A recent message on this list gave me the hint about looking in
README.W32, so off I go to download the installer. I downloaded the
installer from the url given in the readme and installed it. Now
(gnutls-available-p) returns t, so I figure I'm good. Unfortunately,
attempting to open my IMAP server gives me an error saying "Unknown
service: 993", which is actually pretty laughable.

Anyway, some googling tells me that the version I just installed is
ancient, so I found http://www.gnu.org/software/gnutls/download.html and
that led me to some more recent windows builds, but no installer.

First, a suggestion: change the link in the readme to
http://www.gnu.org/software/gnutls so that as volunteer builders come
and go the links don't go stale.

So now all I need to know is how to install GnuTLS 3.0.11 from the
zipfile. Emacs apparently isn't finding it just from where it's sitting.
I tried copying the dlls into the bin directory on the off chance that
it would work, but no dice. Does anyone know what to change in the
registry? Should I just regserver them and let them work it out? Also,
why are they .dll.a files? What is the meaning of life? I suppose if it
comes down to it, I can trace the older installer and see what it does
to the registry.

Thanks in advance.

Which README in what version of Emacs did you have in mind? The
latest development sources already point to a different location:

  * Optional GnuTLS support

If configure.bat finds the gnutls/gnutls.h file in the include path,
Emacs is built with GnuTLS support by default; to avoid that you can
    pass the argument --without-gnutls.

In order to support GnuTLS at runtime, a GnuTLS-enabled Emacs must
be able to find the relevant DLLs during startup; failure to do so
is not an error, but GnuTLS won't be available to the running

emacs init script under windows

All i want is to run that script.
Hot to assure that it run? I mean, printing smth. like "Hello, world" into
emacs output (if any).
In 3.5 from
http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/windows/big.html#Installing-Emacs there
found that my init folder is C:\Users\ice\AppData\Roaming\. At least also
emacs writes smth into auto-save-list subfolder.
Created next files there:
.emacs
_emacs
init.el
None of them seems to run.

Moreover, how to run my own commands in session as one script file? Tried to
do smth in emacs shell
via M-c eshell but files are not executable. Chmod of course doesn't work
because there is no modes under windows. What to do actually?

xargs with quotes...

A recent-ish version of emacs seems be defaulting the xargs command to be in quotes when I run M-x find-grep, like thus:

find . -type f -print0 | "xargs" -0 -e grep -nH

I've set grep-find-use-xargs to 'gnu.  I'm using cygwin as my find and grep commands.

When I run it like this, I get:

find . -type f -print0 | "xargs" -0 -e grep -nH foo
warning: extra args ignored after '-e'
xargs: WARNING: a NUL character occurred in the input.  It cannot be passed through in the argument list.  Did you mean to use the --null option?

Without the quotes (like it used to do), it works fine.

Is this some environmental thing I've inadvertently triggered?   Is there some way to turn it off?

You need to install the Diff program.

I'm not sure I completely understand your question. Are you trying to
get Emacs to read your startup file, like .emacs? If so, have you set
your HOME environment variable to point to it's location?
