dvipng 0.4

Release notes for version 0.4 of the dvipng package:

This program makes PNG graphics from DVI files as obtained from TeX
and its relatives.

This release is mainly to provide documentation. It does also
introduce "drift", compensating for rounding errors along the lines
described in 'dvitype'. Also, on systems with a fairly new gd
(>=2.0.14), the PNG compression can be specified on the commandline,
the default is to opt for speed.

It has been tested but will probably need further testing. Report any
bugs you find, see README for instructions.

./configure problem on Solaris

Hi there,

I've got a problem running the configure script from preview-latex 0.7.8
on Solaris 2.7:

[reichmuth <at> fen1105 10] /tmp/preview-latex-0.7.8 $ ./configure
--prefix=/home/reichmuth
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/local/bin/ginstall -c
checking for emacs... /home/reichmuth/bin/emacs
checking if /home/reichmuth/bin/emacs is XEmacs... no
./configure[1473]: syntax error at line 1755 : `fi' unexpected

Could it be that autoconf has been making Linux-centric assumptions
about what should be in /bin/sh?

We do have people working with Solaris, but the testers there are
more sparse.

Could you check whether the problem persists in the current CVS
version?

I can imagine. :)

Yes, it does:

 [reichmuth <at> fen1105 22] /tmp/preview-latex $ ./configure
 --prefix=/home/reichmuth
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
 checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/local/bin/ginstall -c
 checking for emacs... /home/reichmuth/bin/emacs
checking if /home/reichmuth/bin/emacs is XEmacs... no
 ./configure: syntax error at line 1168 : `}' unexpected

This was using autoconf 2.50. I can't update that due to administrator
retardedness. Shouldn't make a difference, though, as 2.57 from the release
version of preview-latex seems to generate the same syntax error.

Since the line numbers are autoconf dependent, would it possible for
you to check out more closely what the corresponding lines from
configure.in would be? Does the log file give additional info?

long narrow blank images

is all I'm getting from dvipng-0.4 on a Red Hat 8.0 Linux system. Any
suggestions?

Maybe telling us a small example TeX file and theoptions you call
dvipng with? That should give a guess at whether the problem is "to
be expected" or does not occur in the same way on other machines.

This has been reported earlier to me privately. I'll fix it when I
return from my vacation. The strange thing is that I _did_ test before
release. What version of libgd are you using? (rpm -q libgd)

Use 0.3 for now, my vacation ends next weekend. Although I am going on
a conference on the following wednesday.

Good grief. Are you sure about this (so it isn't 1.8.3 or such)?
PNG support was added in libgd-1.6. And dvipng is about PNG creation.
I'll put this in the documentation when I get back from vacation.

If you are using 1.3, I'm surprised it even built. So again, is it
_really_ using 1.3? I seem to remember that RH7.3 had libgd-1.8.3, but
I can't check that right now, my laptop has had a disk crash.

rel-0-7-8; Preview (sometimes) doesn't work with package fixme

> Remember to cover the basics. Including a minimal LaTeX example

With the attached file, C-c C-p C-d (and saying no to caching of
preamble) doesnt generate a preview for the last equation (or anything
after it).

If you change the maths inside the fixme command (eg change the first
`\Split' to `Split') then things work again...
