Initial Comment:
I noticed that I would get "JID malformed" error messages in conference rooms at conference.jabber.org
(this probably started happening when they switched server software a while ago). Now I took a look at the
xml log, and found that presence updates are sent to the bare JID of the MUC, instead of room <at> server/nick as
specified in section 7.4 (Changing Availability Status) of XEP-0045.  Looks like the function
jabber-send-presence is the one responsible.
