11.85; preview not rendering jpeg images

I tried the builtin example circ.tex and I can't seem to get it to work. With png and dvipng as preview-image-type, I got errors saying error in process sentinel: preview-reraise-error: preview-image-type setting 'png unsupported by this Emacs Setting it to jpeg, seems to render some black boxes inline (similar to what you see in the HELLO file when the appropriate fonts are not there). Of course, clicking on the boxes with mouse2/3 gives the preview options but it refreshes to the same boxes. This is what I also see in the *messages* buffer (lots of them).
