OERu featured in Campus Review, Australia

Professor Jim Taylor was interviewed recently by Campus Review, Australia about the OERu. See:

Extract

“I think the new technology tends to extend access into more [areas] rather than limiting access,” he told Campus Review.  Taylor has a particular interest in the role of new technology to expand access to education; he is one of the chief drivers of the Open Education Resource university project. Thousands of people around the world and dozens of institutions, including universities and vocational providers in New Zealand, Canada, Australia, the United States, South Africa and India are participating in the project, whose motto is “towards free learning opportunities for students world wide”. Later this year the OERu will run its first prototype program, with around six courses available to study online. All resources and lectures are free, with students paying for assessment. It is part of a growing movement towards openness and accessibility in higher education in general, said Taylor.

“I think there are a number of trends in requiring public funded research to be made accessible,” he said. “I think there’s a real critical mass of open education resources available in most disciplines already. I think it’s a matter of people making the most of the public funds that are allocated to research – there’s a strong social justice dimension to the thinking, and I think there’s an attitude that if the government wants to increase access to higher education then it has to explore alternative models.”

The open model also allows people who might have been unable to commit financially, or who may have lacked the confidence, to enroll in a full degree program. The OERu plans to offer a bachelor of general studies, a liberal arts degree, as it’s first full program. Taylor said he believed successful students would probably end up transferring to mainstream degree programs. “The OA movement enables [students] to engage without a financial liability,” he said. “The quality of the materials is in many respects exceedingly good because they are public and open to scrutiny.”

The OERu: Enabling universal access to higher education (Video: Prof Jim Taylor, USQ)

In celebration of Open Education Week 2012, Professor Jim Taylor from the University of Southern Queensland (USQ)  recorded a video summarising the OERu model.

Jim also provides a taster and demonstration of "free range" learning incorporating a "pedagogy of discovery" enabled by the global inventory of existing OERs, The Regional Relations in Asia and the Pacific course is scheduled to run as USQ's contribution to the OERu 2012 prototype

Jim Taylor suggested during the early planning phases of the OERu concept that this "is not theoretical speculation, but entirely viable".  I think he's right!

Open Education Week: A personal commitment to open education

As part of the Open Education Week activities, the Open Education Group have prepared a "Statement of Commitment"  intended for individuals to publically pledge their support for Open Education.  It has been drawn up by the newly formed Open Education Group which aims to support, develop, sustain and influence policy in Open Education.

The statement of commitment:

"I will, whenever possible, release the educational content I produce under an open licence and whenever I am looking for resources for education I will endeavour to seek out content with an open licence.”

I signed -- a great way to celebrate Open Education Week 2012.

Happy Open Education Week! Great collection of international presentations on the OERu

As the inaugural Open Education Week 2012 draws to a close, it is refreshing to see a number of international presentations on the OERu from international partners and researchers.

Thanks to our friends at the University of Leicester and the Toucans project for taking the initiative to invite the OERu network to participate in this event.

If you missed any of the contributions, you can access a the contributions online:
  • Professor Jim Taylor, University of Southern Queensland, (Video including a taster of the "pedagogy of discovery" planned for USQ's OERu prototype course:  Regional Relations in Asia and the Pacific)
  • Vasi Doncheva, NorthTec (Slide show presentation on why NorthTec has joined the OERu network and anticipated return on investment.)
  • Professor Sandra Wills, University of Wollongong  (Slide show highlighting what joining the OERu network means for a top 200 research university and blended learning.)
  • Gabi Witthaus, University of Leicester (Slide show summarising progress on the Toucans research project on the OERu).
  • Professor Rory McGreal, UNESCO-COL Chair for OER and team at Athabasca University showcased the new OER Knowledge Cloud.
  • Wayne Mackintosh, OER Foundation (Due to travel commitments, I recorded an informal asynchronous video profiling our international OERu partners.)
Happy Open Education Week. Well done to the OERu team!

(If I have missed any OERu presentations - please send me the links.)
