Code4Lib Journal Issue 15 is now available!

Please excuse the cross post:

It is my pleasure to announce that Issue 15 of the Code4Lib Journal has been published. Please go to
http://journal.code4lib.org/issues/issue-15 for these excellent articles:

Editorial Introduction
       by Tod A. Olson
       http://journal.code4lib.org/articles/5989
This Hallowe’en finds our contributors working away like (benign) mad scientists, assembling and
deploying their creations to bring services and information in novel ways to their patrons and staff,
approaching their work with a vital sprit of invention and discovery.

Controlled Terms or Free Terms? A JavaScript Library to Utilize Subject Headings and Thesauri on the Web
by Shun Nagaya, Yutaka Hayashi, Shuhei Otani and Keizo Itabashi
       http://journal.code4lib.org/articles/5994
There are two types of keywords used as metadata: controlled terms and free terms. Free terms have the
advantage that metadata creators can freely select keywords, but there also exists a disadvantage that
the information retrieval recall ratio might be reduced. The recall ratio can be improved by using
controlled terms. But creating and maintaining controlled vocabularies has an enormous cost. In
addition, many existing controlled vocabularies are published in formats less suitable for
programming. We introduce a JavaScript library called “covo.js” that enables us to make use of
controlled vocabularies as metadata for the organization of web pages.

Best Practices for a University Laptop Lending Program
by Pamela Buzzard and Travis Teetor
       http://journal.code4lib.org/articles/5876
The University of Arizona Libraries currently circulates over three hundred pieces of equipment
including laptops, netbooks, projectors and iPads. This article describes the best practices and
workflows we have developed since 2003 to create a laptop/equipment lending program that is efficient
and mindful of financial resources and that our student body loves and continues to support.

Re: Summer Reading Tracking

Thanks, Andrew. Yes, we're considering Reading Record.

Evanced Summer Reader, Library Insight, Reading Record...

Are there any vendor products out there or is that it? Anybody made a
Drupal installation profile or feature?

Thanks,

Does anyone use an online system for enrolling patrons and tracking their progress for summer reading
programs? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks.

OITP, LITA seek nominations for cutting-edge technology practices, still open

Nominations are still open

OITP, LITA seek nominations for cutting-edge technology practices

Washington, D.C. – The American Library Association (ALA) Office for Information Technology Policy
(OITP) and the Library & Information Technology Association (LITA) are soliciting nominations for best
library practices using cutting-edge technology.

“We want to showcase libraries that are serving their communities with novel and innovative methods and
provide the library community with some successful models for delivering quality library service in new
ways,” said Christine Hage, chair of the Cutting-edge Technology in Library Services selection
committee. “We welcome LITA’s expertise and additional reach in this effort.”

Last year, four libraries were cited for their work: Creekview High School in Canton, Ga.; Orange County
Library System in Orlando, Fla.; North Carolina State University Libraries in Raleigh, N.C.; and
OhioLINK in Columbus, Ohio.

“We are pleased to work with OITP to select and highlight the outstanding work taking place every day in
our nation’s school, academic and public libraries, as well as in library consortia and state
libraries,” said Mark Beatty, LITA past president and member of the selection committee.

A joint committee of members from the Subcommittee on America’s Libraries for the 21st Century and LITA
will review all nominations and may conduct selected interviews or site visits to identify those
libraries that are truly offering a best practice or most innovative service. Libraries or library
service areas selected will be publicized via the OITP and LITA websites, highlighted through ALA
publications, and featured in a program at the ALA Annual Conference in 2012.

Evaluation Rubrics for Web-Based Discovery Systems

Dear Colleagues,

My institution is currently evaluating four web-based discovery
systems (Primo, Summon, EBSCO Discovery and WorldCat Local).

Does anyone have an evaluation rubric for web-based discovery systems
that they could share with me? We came up with several points,
however, we also thought that looking at other institutions' rubrics
would be useful (just in case we forgot something, etc.).

Thanks so much for your consideration!

Best wishes,

Jackie Radebaugh

Library Security Systems for materials

Loss Prevention Security Systems We currently use a 3M security system in our library to tag and alarm our
books, audio, video, magazine items. We are looking for alternatives...
We have used a 3M system to tag, sensitize and desensitize our items for 15+ years now. The alarms often go off
(esp. for audio and video materials), even though we have desensitized (turned off) the alarm. Do other
libraries experience this problem, and if so have they resolved it? Please share your experience and also
any alternatives that are working for your library! Thank you!!

Re: Library Security Systems for materials

It has been my experience that these type of security gates are sensitive to a variety of metal objects. They
have been set off by the metal tips on tap-dancing shoes in someone's backpack, and a set of wrenches that
someone carried in his fanny-pack.

Re: Facebook Ads

Hi Joe, sorry for the slow response - really digging out of a backlog here!

I don't know if the information is still relevant, but I did a fairly comprehensive writeup of my library's
experience running some ads on Facebook a few years ago (wow does time fly!): http://distlib.blogs.com/distlib/2008/01/followup-on-fac.html

Has anyone ran ads on Facebook? If so what did you think and what was your costs. I know they are PPC, but we were
curious to see what others ended up spending.
