show a little love for libraries at SXSW!

**apologies for cross-posting**

Hi Folks!

Do you want spread a little library love to the geeks at the South by Southwest (SXSW) interactive festival?
If so - please vote for a library program before the end of the day - Friday, September 2!

As part of my adventures this year, I attended SXSWi and came away totally inspired - but more than a little
worried. The people I talked to there - who are creating our digital present and future - expressed a deep
affection for libraries but didn't think we were particularly relevant. Yikes!

Of course, libraries *are* particularly relevant - so I and another colleague from Colorado - Oliver
Sanidas -- were inspired to submit a library program for consideration. There are just a handful of
library programs submitted to SXSWi (you can see them at
http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/ideas/index/10/name:library ), and if you agree that the tech
community gathering at SXSWi each year needs learn more about libraries, I encourage you to vote! There
are some really good library programs that would educate and inspire this important group of people to see
the library in a whole new light. You will have to register on the site to vote (sorry) but I hope it's not too
much of an inconvenience - after you register and get the confirmation email, you can simply copy the URL
above into your
browser to see the library programs and vote.

The program I submitted is called "The Great Library Swindle - Your Rights Are at Risk" -- and Ollie's
program is called "The library died and no one noticed" but don't feel any obligation. Take a look, and hit
the "thumbs up" on any program that you think would be worthy - there are some good ones there!

Thanks!

Re: Study room booking systems

We have 15 study rooms in our new building and one of our other campuses has 3 in their
rennovated facility.

I notice that you're a III library (as is our library). We're using their booking module and
Circulation to do this. We have NOT yet enable self-booking. I'll be glad to provide details if you're
interested.

I was wondering what systems everybody used for study room bookings. We
have 7 study rooms and plan on adding many more in the future.
Currently we use an Excel spreadsheet. Obviously users can not book
rooms by themselves and see availability online which is an ability we
would like to have.

Feel free to contact me off list if you prefer.

Thanks,

Mick

I know one university running FOSS MRBS http://mrbs.sourceforge.net/

I've almost given up trying to get to run on a w2k3 VM running apache - but the other uni is very happy with it.

Re: Study room booking systems

If you do not have an aversion to open source, we use phpScheduleIt. It gets the job done for us. Just be aware,
a new version is currently in alpha. If you think that you will need quotas, you might want to wait for
version 2 to come out of alpha.

Study Room Booking Solution

Mick,
Springshare just released a room booking software. It looks pretty good. I
think we will start using it soon. We have been using Google, but like you
we wanted a self-booking system. Check it out at

Re: Study Room Booking Solution

We saw a demo of the SpringShare product as well and it looked really nice,
especially considering that this company seems really eager to take
suggestions for future iterations.

Although we haven't tested it yet, it looked like you could adapt it to
hardware/device loans, lab computer reservations, etc.

We plan on exploring it more soon.

Re: Study room booking systems

We have recently started using MRBS after several complaints on the III
booking module interface. We have personalized MRBS for our campus css. It
offers many options for authentication and we chose email authentication so we
are able to authenticate users of the campus IT email server without having to
go through campus IT bureaucracy to connect to LDAP, Shiboleth, or other. I
would send a URL but as just stated it authenticates of our email server to
get in. I understand MRBS is well documented, I didn't work on this project
myself.

SWIB11 (Semantic Web in Libraries) 28.-30.11. in Hamburg - Registration opens

SWIB11 (Semantic Web in Libraries) 28.-30.11.2011 in Hamburg
publishes conference program and opens registration

http://swib.org/swib11/

A rising number of actors in librarianship and its related fields
are experimenting with Semantic Web technologies and Linked Open
Data (LOD). The LOD cloud as a whole grew by 300% in 2010, whereas
the amount of data relevant for libraries grew by nearly 1000%.
For many, the question now arises how to integrate their holdings
into the LOD cloud and how to embed externally provided LOD data
into their own applications, adding value through cross-domain
linking. The first conference day will focus on the corresponding
infrastructure requirements.

At the same time, the principles and workflows of traditional
scholarly communication and publication are under scrutiny with a
view to a consistently web-based data and service infrastructure
comprising the entire research and publication process. Concepts
like "Semantic Publishing", "Enhanced Publications" or "Research
Objects" mark the re-orientation of academic work, away from
monolithic, comparatively unflexible and barely interlinked
reference points towards a distributed, comparatively granular
data infrastructure which is continuously accessible to
researchers and into which their contributions recognizably
return. These developments will be discussed on the second day of
the conference.

For the first time we offer workshops and tutorials on the day
before the main conference, providing introductions into Linked
