Re: map showing public library closings- here it is!! Mission accomplished!

Thanks to early birds Lynn and Peter, who solved the mystery.

The map I was referring to was the one mentioned in beSpacific's post
below (that's where I saw it...and incidentally, in case you don't
subscribe to the beSpacific newsletter, I warmly recommend it....)

LosingLibraries.org is Launched by Librarians and Library Journal

In Libraries

"In an effort to map and chronicle the full range of cuts, closings, and
diminished library services nationally, Library Journal, in partnership
with Mandy Knapp and Laura Solomon (responsible for
SaveOhioLibraries.com), has launched LosingLibraries.org. The dynamic
website, which relies on reader contributions, has begun to track - via
links to articles, announcements, and press releases - the myriad cuts
and changes affecting public libraries around the country. Color-coded
tags indicate which kind of cuts have been implemented, including branch
closures, staff layoffs, and reduced hours. The map also overlays the
changing annual picture since the recession began in 2008."

Book-scanning projects - a question

Here's something I've always been curious about...

Most of the book-scanning projects are focusing on digitizing works in the public domain, right? And the
public domain is basically books published before 1923, right?

So, aren't most of these projects the equivalent of building a physical library collection of pre-1923 books?

I realize that Google is THE big exception here. They're scanning in-copyright works. But it remains to be
seen, pending the Google books settlement, what sort of access we all will get to these works. Google may
well wind up being largely a pre-1923 library collection, with some exceptions regarding access to the
full text of post-1923 works.

Anyway, like I said...something I've always been curious about, so I thought I'd finally ask. :-)

Slideshare "slidecast" unstable?

Dear Colleagues,

I know that many of you have probably posted slideshows to slideshare.net . I attempted (supposedly
successfully) to link an MP3 file of a narration to a PPT presentation that I had on Slideshare. Then to make
a slidecast I tried to synchronize the linked MP3 narration to the slideshow. When I was done I ran the
presentation, but there was no sound.

I also see tutorials on slideshare about making slidecasts -- and when I view these, they have no sound. Not
only that, but people are commenting "I like irony, but if slidecasts imply sound, how come there isn't
any?" (Incidentally my computer has sound)

Have any of you experienced this quirky slidecast problem in slideshare? Is there a way around it? What have
you done to solve it?

I like AuthorSTREAM much better, but I thought I'd give this slidecast thing on Slideshare a try; I was unsuccessful.

Any comments will be appreciated! Thanks.

QR Codes – Using Mobile Phones To Deliver Library Instruction

Walsh A. 2010. QR Codes – using mobile phones to deliver library instruction
and help at the point of need. Journal of information literacy, 4(1), pp.
55-65 [snip]

Abstract

Though true location aware devices such as GPS enabled phones are becoming
more common (e.g., the latest iPhone includes GPS and compass) developing
services that “augment” reality is unrealistic for most libraries due to
time; money and technical constraints.

There is an easier option though – using small printed codes, such as QR
codes, around the library that link to resources and information appropriate
to their location. QR (Quick Response) codes are a matrix codes, like a two
dimensional bar code. They can be read by mobile phones with integrated
cameras, with a small application installed. Some mobiles come with the
application ready installed, though it can also be download for free from
the internet and installed on PDAs, smartphones and other mobile devices. At
the University of Huddersfield we have used QR codes to deliver context
appropriate help and information to blur the boundaries between the physical
and electronic world. We’ve developed mobile friendly materials to deliver
information skills materials directly to our users at the point of need,
linked by QR codes on printed materials and on appropriate locations in the
physical library. This article outlines the practical uses we’ve found for
QR codes and gives preliminary results of how they’ve been received by our
library users.

Re: Slideshare "slidecast" unstable?

It appears something is wrong with their website currently. My presentation
from March that had sound is either missing the sound now or it is not
playing.

Re: Thanks... SMS to Chat help

Maybe someone already posted this and I missed it, but Google Voice recently
opened up to anyone and everyone, so there's no longer a waiting period to
get an invite. You should be able to just create an account and get going
right away.

Enjoy!
