LIS Online Career Fair

LIS Online Career Fair
Are you a new library school graduate – or mid-career and looking for a change? Are you wondering how to
improve your career skills or ready to try a certificate program?  Looking to refresh your resume?
Alliance Library System and TAP Information Services invite you to join us for the first annual LIS Online
Career Fair.  Join us online in OPAL on Tuesday January 12, 2010 for an exciting day of learning how to
start or to rejuvenate your library career in tough times!  The day will kick off at 10 am central time/11
am Eastern/8 am Pacific and run through 4:30 pm central/5:30 pm Eastern. You will have your choice of a
variety of informational and interactive programs which will assist you with your career no matter where
you are.
The conference keynote speaker is Rachel Singer Gordon, webmaster of LISjobs.com, the largest library
career site  and job database, and consulting editor at Information Today Inc., Books Division.
Rachel’s talk, “Career Building in a Down Economy,” will help librarians focus on what they can do
to keep themselves moving forward professionally in a down economy.  While professional literature
discusses what librarians can do to help their communities and patrons, it does not give much information
as to what librarians can do to help themselves.  Rachel will address the ways in which the economy
affects librarians professionally, how to control reactions and frustration, how to deal proactively
with current events, and how to move forward effectively in tough economic times.
Other speakers include:  Christi Confetti Higgins, Sun Microsystems; Cindy Hill, Hill Information
Consulting; Morgan Cadwalader, Alliance Library System; Kitty Pope, Alliance Library System; Barbara
McFadden Allen, Career on Institutional Cooperation; Meredith Farkas, Norwich University; Rose
Chenoweth, Alliance Library System; Jim Rettig, University of Richmond; Marianne Steadley,
University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science and more!
For more information on this conference, check out http://liscareerfair.org .   Thecost of the one day
online event is $29 for graduate library students;  $39 for librarians, and for a group, the price is $79.
For more information, please contact Lori Bell at ALS at lbell <at> alliancelibrarysystem.com or Tom Peters

Camtasia studio & mobile phones -- problem?

Greetings. Has someone successfully used Camtasia Studio to create MP4s for
mobile phones? I'm having no luck with it--the files do come out fine when
rendered for the iPhone, but those I try to produce as 320x240 mp4 files tie
my (non-i-) phone in knots. All I get is "File has incorrect data."

I'm guessing there's something I'm missing?

Thanks for any tips,

My son Tim Rasmussen has done some work on websites delivering video to
mobile phones. He and I have discussed it enough that I know it's not
trivial! There are considerable differences in devices, models, OS
versions, browser versions, etc., including:

* Some can stream video, some can only download and then play.
* Different video file formats may be required.
* Different screen sizes may require different files.
* There are many variations within MP4, I believe.

Adding to the confusion:

* The device doesn't directly tell the web server what it needs.
* Everything is constantly changing.

If you'd like to consult with him on this, his email is in the CC's.

Regards,
....Bob Rasmussen, President, Rasmussen Software, Inc.

MP4 is a container format and can hold video and audio streams in several
different formats, with several different codecs. You may have to dig out some
documentation on your (non-i-) phone to see exactly what it supports, then look
for overlap with the iPhone.

This may be of some use to you:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_container_formats

This might help you convert files from one codec to another:
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

Or ffmpeg from various places, including:

What Thomas said. Camtasia may be able to export video in a variety of
formats/codecs but you need to go one step further using a 3rd party
converter.

Here's a good list of helper applications from Mashable.com.

Re: Camtasia studio & mobile phones -- problem?

Yes, thanks Bob, and Thomas. I have used that 'SUPER' software you
recommend, and it did work well to convert files for my phone...what we're
trying to do, though, is put up our library tour files in formats that'll
work on as many phones as possible.

Examples of what I mean: http://faculty.kutztown.edu/rjensen/cmc.mp4 came
out of Camtasia Studio--and it does NOT work on my phone.

http://faculty.kutztown.edu/rjensen/pcast.mp4 (it ends abruptly) DOES work
on my phone. This file was converted from a Camtasia-produced .m4v using
software called Ultra Quick Time Converter.

I wonder first of all if other phones see the same results as mine? I spoke
today with Camtasia tech support--their guy told me mine was the third
mobile-related call he'd had today.

Quick research survey participation request

We would like to request your participation in a in a scholarly research
study. The study is being conducted to determine how well prepared,
librarians with significant technology roles, are for their positions in
academic libraries, how they acquired the skills needed to do their jobs and
how difficult they are to hire and retain

There are two surveys related to this project: one is for those with library
administrative roles at level of department head or higher, and the second
survey is for those librarians/professionals with very significant
technology roles now or in the past.

You are welcome to take both surveys if you fit both criteria. The surveys
are anonymous; there is nothing that will identify you or your organization.
The surveys consists of 9 questions each, some of which are multipart and
should take under 10 minutes to complete. The surveys will be available
until December 18th at 8pm CST.

In the event the data is later published, we will send a follow up email to
this same listserv to advise the list of where they can access the results.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either of us. You are
welcome to forward this email to anyone you think may be interested.

Here is a link to the administrative survey:
