Re: Call for Papers: Computer-Mediated Communication across Cultures: International Interactions in Online Environments

Hello,

I am a library and information science graduate student, and I'm interested in contributing to the
paper... somehow.

Here's an October 28th snippet of my email to Gloria Zamora, President of Special Libraries Association (SLA):
Isn't it interesting that the word "die" has an English meaning
equivalent to death, but the German "die" is pronounced differently and
it means "the"; and the way English people pronounce "die" is similar
to the Filipino way of saying "day", short for "inday", which means
"[young] girl." And there's also "dye" as in "color dye."

Sincerely,

eCAT: Online Electronic Lab Notebook For Scientific Research

eCAT: Online Electronic Lab Notebook For Scientific Research / Nigel H
Goddard , Rory Macneil and Jonathan Ritchie / Automated Experimentation
/ 2009 / 1:4 / doi:10.1186/1759-4499-1-4 / Published: 29 October 2009

Abstract (provisional)

Background

eCAT is an electronic lab notebook (ELN) developed by Axiope Limited. It
is the first online ELN, the first ELN to be developed in close
collaboration with lab scientists, and the first ELN to be targeted at
researchers in non-commercial institutions. [snip]

Results

[snip] More than 100 individuals and groups worldwide then participated
in the beta testing between September 2008 and June 2009. The generally
positive response is reflected in the following quote about how one lab
is making use of eCAT: "Everyone uses it as an electronic notebook, so
they can compile the diverse collections of data that we generate as
biologists, such as images and spreadsheets. We use to it to take
minutes of meetings. We also use it to manage our common stocks of
antibodies, plasmids and so on. Finally, perhaps the most important
feature for us is the ability to link records, reagents and
experiments."

Re: Google Analytics - Tracking Installed

We're using Google Analytics to track use of the HathiTrust catalog (http://catalog.hathitrust.org/).

I think it does a pretty good job. I can pretty easily view hits on individual or different types of pages
(search home, search results, holdings pages, author browse) and all kinds of other useful data like
which facets are used most, etc. I'm currently working on setting up some of the more advanced features
like event tracking (to track outbound links) and advanced segments.

Do you have more specifics about what want to track?

Best,
Suzanne

Related question: What's the state of the art of using Google

published a guide to it?

The Art of Fundraising and Grant writing online conference

In these tough economic times, libraries are relying more and more on fundraising and grant writing.
Alliance Library System and Learning Times are co-sponsoring “The Art of Grant Writing and
Fundraising” on Thursday November 19 as an online
conference to help libraries meet the challenge of finding funding in these tough times.  The program
will offer a number of programs for beginners through intermediate and advanced levels of all aspects of
grant writing and fundraising.   Sirsi-Dynix is sponsoring this conference.  The day will kick off
at 10 am central time/11 am Eastern time and run through 4:30 pm central/5:30 pm Eastern.

Keynote speakers include Peter Pearson who is President of the Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library in
Minnesota.  This organization is unique in that it is both a Friends Group and a Foundation. The
organization has assets of approximately 12 million dollars at its disposal.  Pearson recently spoke
at ALA and will discuss how the economy is or isn’t affecting fundraising and basics to keep in mind for
success at fundraising.  Kitty Pope, Executive Director of the Alliance Library System, is the second
keynote speaker.  She will speak on grant writing and how in today’s world, it takes a team to plan and
implement successful grant writing and projects.  No longer is grant writing done by one person; now
successful grant projects require the support of the entire organization and staff on all levels with
various expertise to see a successful grant from start to implementation of and reporting on the project.

Other speakers include:  Lisa Valdez from San Jose State University School of Library and Information
Science; Chuck Thomas, IMLS; Stephanie Gerding and Pam McKellar, authors of the grants for libraries
blog; Tari Hughes, Nashville Public Library Foundation; Tom Peters, TAP Information Services; Allison
Miller of the Internet Public Library; and a variety of other highly qualified speakers.

For more information on this conference, check out  http://www.fundraisingconference.org .   The
cost of the one day online event is $69.00.  For a group, the price is $99.00.  If this registration fee is a
hardship, please contact Lori Bell at lbell <at> alliancelibrarysystem.com for a discount coupon of $20 off
registration price.  Library students can attend for free – contact Lori Bell for information.

This workshop is part of a three event series offered by Alliance Library System and Learning Times.  The

AdRotator ideas and or examples

I'm looking for some AdRotator examples that I could use or modify for
our webpage. I looking for something that I can use to showcase our
major events here at our library. Any examples or ideas will be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,
Lee Martin

Re: AdRotator ideas and or examples

I'm currently using a Flash slideshow script to rotate between different images on our site. It was
intended to do exactly what you want to do. We are instead primarily showcasing the different services or
service desks we offer. The script we are using is called Monoslideshow(.com). It's not free, but the fee
is minimal - it runs off an XML configuration file. I have it setup so that if the user does not have
JavaScript/Flash enabled, they still see an image placeholder with a link to our event calendar. (sspl.org)

There are also JavaScript based slideshow/gallery scripts that offer similar functionality, and I
actually intend to move to one from this (JavaScript is printable, Flash is not - and it works on more
devices). I just haven't found a JavaScript version that I'm completely happy with. I may roll my own.

To get you started, here's an example of one I like, but is simply missing one feature I want:
http://www.serie3.info/s3slider/demonstration.html
<http://www.serie3.info/s3slider/demonstration.html>
This runs directly off the HTML markup already contained in your page, and therefore more accessibility-friendly.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
This popular and growing two-day conference is now in its third year.
The conference includes keynote, concurrent, hands-on and poster
sessions highlighting many of the technologies affecting how users
interact with libraries, as well as how libraries are using technology
to create new and better ways to manage existing resources. This
Conference is an opportunity for library staff and the technologists who
support them to discuss how these technologies are affecting library
services; to see examples of what libraries are doing with these
technologies; and to allow participants to learn specific skills or
knowledge that they can take back and adapt for use within their own
library.
