Re: The TARDIS Library Metaphor for 2.0

Greetings Jean,

As far as I know, the Rhode Island State Library does not have a
TARDIS. The State Law Library has
access to Lexis Nexis, but that is about as close as it gets.

RE: City blocking suspected 'criminal' networks

This isn't exactly identical to your situation, but for a while our
patron feedback form was getting a lot of spam advertising porn and
virus sites. As a temporary patch I blocked the IP addresses for all the
major Russian and Chinese ISPs, and 90% of the spam stopped. I later
replaced the script with something I had written that was more secure
and did some serious data validation, and undid the blocking. Unless our
patrons were trying to reach us while they were out of the country, I
don't think anyone legitimately using the form was impacted.

Honestly, if the Wikipedia article is correct, I'm not certain how a
legitimate business could buy hosting from this company.

"The business is difficult to trace. It is not a registered company, and
its domains are registered to anonymous addresses. Its owners are known
only by nicknames. It does not advertise, and trades only in untraceable
electronic transactions."

I think the city may be doing your staff member a favor. It is possible
that the birdseed company in question is engaged in some sort of
nefarious activity such as money laundering.

Business/Professional/Customer Social Networks?

Colleagues/

>Next month I will give an invited presentation at the CALSI 2009 conference /workshop in Valencia, Spain<

"Connections: Online Social Networks for Business"

La Sociedad del Conocimiento: Innovación y Nuevos Retos Globales

March 10 2009 / 11:30-12:30

While Facebook and MySpace are among the better-known general online social networks, there are an
ever-increasing number of online networks that have emerged for and within a wide variety of groups.
Among many others, these include networks for academe and education (e.g., EduSpaces), people of color
(e.g., Black Planet), Boomers (e.g., Boomj), LGBT groups (e.g., GLEE), religion (e.g., MyChurch), and
researchers and scholars (e.g., Nature Network). Among the fastest growing niche networks are those
created by and on behalf of businesses (e.g., LinkedIn).

This presentation will provide an overview of the variety of niche online networks, with a focus on those
created to better connect and engage customers, employees, and professionals.

I am greatly interested of learning of any and all Business/Professional/Customer Social Networks

BTW: I am aware of the major business/professional sites listed in Wikipedia

RE: The TARDIS Library Metaphor for 2.0

I get Web4lib by digest, so apologies if this is old news.

TARDIS stands for Time and Relative Dimensions in Space. More
information than most people want to know about the Doctor's Tardis can
be found in the inevitable Wikipedia article at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TARDIS.

I am more a fan of the old series, but find much to like about the new
one. I watch the new series through DVDs as I am one of the six people
in North America who do not have cable.

I really appreciated the first post on this thread and like the
metaphor. Libraries really can put you into nearly any point in time
and/or space.

SMS Texting down via AIM/Meebo Combination

Hi All,

This may not apply to many at this time, but I thought I would give a
heads up to those of you:

1.) Using the free SMS service from AIM on your website

2.) Using Meebo's web interface to reply to AIM messages

This does NOT currently apply if you are only using MeeboMe widget for
anonymous users - and are using Pidgin/Adium/etc. for replying to
messages.

To explain . . . Meebo has disabled the ability to reply to AIM
messages originating from a mobile phone, because of problems with AIM
shutting down people's accounts. (See:
http://forum.meebo.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=19265&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=SMS)

If this ends up being a "terms of use" issue - this problem could
spread to libraries using services like LibraryH3lp, Digsby, Plugoo,
etc. - as well as local clients (though it's much less likely for
locally installed software not using IM gateways).

Just giving everyone a heads up - I certainly hope we're the only one
this affects.

(I don't check this particular listserv often, but will try to check
back on this thread if any of you have questions ... but better e-mail
me directly just in case.)

UHF RFID in LMS

Dear All,

We are planning to implement RFID based Library Automation in a engineering college (INDIA).  I
would like to get inputs from those who have already implemented the
same. We prefer UHF tags and readers since long read range can be
achieved and cheaper than HF tags. Has anyone used UHF based RFID
system in Libraries?

Regards

Mohan

Fix for AIM SMS problem

The fix for the AIM SMS texting can be found at http://mobile.aol.com/aolproducts/aimtxt?loc=aim

The new process is
Send to 246246
Begin message with 'send screenname'

Hope this helps.

AIM changed the number. I hope this is only a one time change not a frequent change to keep libraries from
abusing the technique.
