2008 Library Automation Survey -- closing soon

Gentle reminder: The 2008 Library Automation Survey will be closing
soon.

If you have not yet responded, I hope that you will do so in the next
few days. Please help me assess the current state of the library
automation arena by responding to the survey and giving your library's
perceptions of its current automation software and the organizations
involved in supporting it.

Original survey invitation message:

I am conducting another round of the library automation perceptions
survey. Last year's survey was the basis for "Perceptions 2007: an
international survey of library automation:"

  http://www.librarytechnology.org/perceptions2007.pl

The data collected through this year's survey will inform a similar
report that provides the statistical results and interprets to the
extent possible what it says about the current library automation arena.

The survey aims to measure how libraries perceive their current library
automation system, the companies involved in their support and
development, and to gauge interest in open source alternatives. As more
libraries become involved with open source ILS products, I'm especially
interested in measuring their satisfaction relative to those that use
traditionally licensed systems.

Last year I received 1,779 survey responses. An even larger volume of
responses this year will help increase the validity of the survey and

basic html question

one of those answers that will occur instantly to someone on this list:
I recently edited one of my web pages to insert a graphical banner at the
head of the page. For some reason, the header would not display in IE if it
was a JPEG file, and would only display as a GIF. In Firefox et al, it
displayed fine in any format. The code used was <h2 style="margin-bottom:
0"> <img src="/icons/SummitIcon.GIF" height="69" width="700" /> </h2>

It's a trivial point, but the res of the JPG was much better and makes the
site look crisper. Any ideas?

RE: basic html question

Doesn't sound trivial to me. If the application calls for JPEG, then you
should use JPEG.

It might help if we knew which version of IE you are using. There are a
lot of idiosyncratic bugs in various versions of IE that do not occur in
others. For instance, if you're on IE 6, try testing on 7. I find that a
number of issues pop up in testing that I missed as we have a handful of
employees that still use IE 6 for compatibility with one of our internal
systems.

Here are two things to try. Add a unit of measure to your CSS in the
style attribute. For instance use "0px" instead of "0". Stylesheets tend
to default to px, but generally when coding anything, it is best not to
rely too much on default behaviors. Also, try adding a border attribute
to you img tag. Set it to 0, or whatever width you want it to be. Again,
most browsers will render the image with a default setting, but it is
best not to expect it to be consistent with what you want.

Good luck solving your bug.

How was the jpg made? What was the file name and are you sure you the
case the same? Were the copies of IE and firefox both "clean"? (That
is, no cache was in affect that could cause issues)? What were the
sizes of the images? How did you save the images? There's a couple
of quirks with IE and jpg images apparently.

I'd try creating a webpage with just the image making sure that the
src matched the file path exactly. If it doesn't appear, I'd start
looking for issues like...
http://drupal.org/node/297666 or to make sure the jpg was working correctly.

Providing direct links to the images and to the webpages might be a
bit helpful. It could be that there's an issue with some other part of
the html page that as a side-effect isn't displaying the image, but
then I would expect the gif file not to work.

The Library of Human imagination

Here is a great new form of Library. Not sure if Jay is using Dewey, but he
is quick
to point out that the printing press originally had nothing to do with
reading!

Do you think he got William Shatner to negotiate a good deal on some of his
artifacts?

Update. What web resources are there particularly for libraries' users interested in keeping better track of their progress with their reference desks enquiries.

Any updates?... with respect to

a.
What hints, tips and pointers have you kind folks out there for our
libraries' users interested in keeping better track of their progress on
their own varied and complicated reference desk enquiries?...

b.
And any hints, tips and pointers for libraries' users interested in tracking
progress and letting everyone know of their varied reference desk enquiries
to see if anyone can contribute further ideas?...

It appears that there aren't any really usable and widely known websites
particularly for libraries' users with something like that already setup and
ready for data. There's software for libraries to track use but what's the
state of the art for libraries' users to make ever better use of their
favorite reference desks?

Re: basic html question

As others have pointed out, it probably isn't an HTML problem, but a
problem with how the JPEG image was created or referenced. I do see two
HTML issues, though: don't use the "/>" tag closing unless you're doing
XHTML (and IMO don't do XHTML unless it has to coexist with other XML);
and your img element is missing the required alt attribute.

If the diagnostic tips posted on the list don't help, you should post
the URL to the page.

RE : The Library of Human imagination

That's a question I'd really like answered. But aside from Dewey and
other classifications (LC and colon and others which are all possible
together at the same time, to reveal more connections) I wonder if he's
using ISBD or AACR X? He must have a list somewhere, if only for
insurance purposes.
