Kete 1.1 released

We are delighted to annouce the release of Kete 1.1

Kete 1.1 is now available with a giant helping of new features and
improvements. This is also the first release where you can grab Kete
from our code repository's new home at Github.com. See
http://kete.net.nz/site/topics/show/25-downloads for details or browse
the code online at http://github.com/kete/kete/.

For those who haven't seen Kete in action, Kete is open source software
that enables communities, whether the community is a town or a company,
to collaboratively build their own digital libraries, archives and
repositories. Kete combines features from Knowledge and Content
Management Systems as well as collaboration tools such as wikis, blogs,
tags, and online forums to make it easy to add and relate content on a
Kete site. You could create a service like Google's Knol for your
community using Kete.
An in-depth list of features and issues resolved can be found at
http://kete.net.nz/documentation/topics/show/182-kete-11-features-and-bug-fixes
, but here are some highlights:

• Privacy Control - ability to designate any item version within a
basket as only viewable to its members (guide at

http://kete.net.nz/documentation/topics/show/191-use-privacy-controls-on-whole-site-or-a-specific-basket)

• Content Licensing - users can choose from Kete instance's available
Licenses for a piece of content they create. Creative Commons licenses
are available to be loaded as license options with one command on the
server. (guide at
http://kete.net.nz/documentation/topics/show/181-using-content-licenses-in-kete-11)

RE: Recording bookclubs

Hi,

I recently researched the best gear for recording talks etc. in our library and ended up getting a Zoom H2
field recorder. It is about the size of a cigarette packet.

Features I liked were:
* It takes an SD card that I can then just slot into my laptop
* It has has four built in microphones and I can change what it picked up - eg. just people in front of it, or
people in front and behind it
* It is easy to set up and start - just press a button twice to start, once to stop.
* The audio quality is much better than I've been able to achieve via mike straight into my PC - it's really
studio quality

I was after something I could just put on the desk at the start of a talk and forget it was there. Although it is
possible to do the same thing with laptop and mike, I wanted something that people other than me could
operate simply and would be non-intrusive.

This instructional video gives you some idea how it works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGUgmV9nR0s

Hope this helps

Re: Recording BookClub meetings for podcasts

I am considering the same plan: using podcasts to reach out to the
community. However, I have little tech knowledge and even less
knowledge concerning best equipment (mics, mixers, software, etc).

In short, I too would love to hear from colleagues who have made and
distributed podcasts.

Thanks!

Event: Understanding Human Information Interaction- Sept 15 in Boston

Registration is now open for Gary Marchionini: Understanding Human Information Interaction

Monday, September 15, 2008
Kotzen Center, Simmmons College, Boston, MA

Understanding how people interact with information is a fundamental problem of information science.
Interaction includes finding information in libraries and the WWW, consuming and evaluating what is
found, and using this information to transform personal and global knowledge. Today, most human
information interaction (HII) is mediated by technologies and much of the research is informed by
principles and techniques that evolved in the field of human-computer interaction. This talk will focus
on empirical techniques used to study HII, particularly user studies in laboratories. Investigations
of personal health record usability, video retrieval, and exploratory search will be used to illustrate
these techniques.

Join NE ASIS&T colleagues and Simmons students for this thought provoking talk by Gary Marchionini.

About Gary Marchionini:
Gary Marchionini is Cary C. Boshamer Professor in the School of Information and Library Science at the
University of North Carolina where he teaches courses in human-information interaction, interface
design and testing, and digital libraries. He heads the Interaction Design Laboratory at SILS.
Professor Marchionini has had grants or contracts from the National Science Foundation, Council on
Library Resources, the National Library of Medicine, the Library of Congress, Bureau of Labor
Statistics, Kellogg Foundation, NASA, the National Cancer Institute, Microsoft, Google, and IBM. He
has published over 180 articles, chapters and reports in a variety of books and journals. He is author of a
book titled Information Seeking in Electronic Environments published by Cambridge University Press.
He was Editor-in-Chief for the ACM Transaction on Information Systems from 2002-2008 and serves or has
served on a dozen editorial boards. His current interests and projects are related to: interfaces that
support information seeking and information retrieval; usability of personal health records;
multimedia browsing strategies; digital libraries; personal identity in cyberspace; and evaluation
of interactive media, especially for learning and teaching

RE: Google Chrome (new web browser)

On the plus side, the decision to use the Webkit rendering engine may
ease some of the issues of a new browser entering our universe of
browsers to test against, as it is already used by Safari. What remains
to be seen is how much of a memory hog this thing is. Starting a new
_process_ each time a new tab is opened sounds like a very resource
intensive way of getting around garbage collection problems. I do see
some security advantages in this, but in theory is doesn't sound like
the best approach. I will be eager to try the product, however.
Hopefully my misgivings are addressed in the implementation. The
prospect of a Google browser is definitely more exciting dealing with
the pending IE 8 release.

Google Chrome - Observations

Google Chrome is a great browser for a beta version. I have yet to
find
any page that it can't handle, including many of the adminstrative
pages for setting up databases and administering our services. These
usually tend to be problematic. It is also forcing me to work in a
slightly different manner with more reliance on web based things such
as the native post editor in Blogger. I find myself missiing lots of
the features within several FireFox add ons I use such as ScribeFire.
I
wrote this post using the BlogThis bookmark javascript. It is only a
basic editor. I will look for some better web based editors that will
work with Blogger. If someone uses exclusively web based programs such
a Google Docs and others, Google Chrome is the perfect browser.
