Cites & Insights 8:1 available

For perhaps the first time, the January issue that begins a new volume of
Cites & Insights is available in...January.

Cites & Insights 8:1 (January 2008) is now available for downloading at
http://citesandinsights.info/civ8i1.pdf

The 30-page issue (PDF as always, but HTML separates for each essay are
available at http://citesandinsights.info/ ) includes:

* Announcing Cites & Insights volumes 6 and 7 in book form - Cites &
Insights Books at Lulu.com (http://lulu.com/waltcrawford/) now offers
these volumes in paperback form, $29.50 each, with a bonus in each case
(and full-color cover photos). The bonus for Volume 7 is Cites on a
Plane, the phantom issue from January 2007. For Volume 6, it's a brief
preface including "where are they now?" notes on liblogs studied in 2005
and 2006 that have either moved, changed names or apparently gone
silent.

* Bibs & Blather: Thinking about Leadership - Some thoughts after a few
weeks working on the PALINET Leadership Network, including my current
take on "Who's a leader?"

* Perspective: Discovering Books: An OCA and GBS Retrospective - A full
year after the previous coverage of Open Content Alliance and Google
Book Search, it's time for some updates, but also a quick retrospective
of C&I coverage of these projects.

* Perspective: A Time of Limits? - Does "everybody" actually use
Netflix? Have we all become upper middle class? Is there some limit to
disposable income--and are some of us disposing of income we don't

End of the line for Netscape

<http://blog.netscape.com/2007/12/28/end-of-support-for-netscape-web-browsers/>

> ...we feel it's the right time to end development of Netscape branded
> browsers, hand the reins fully to Mozilla and encourage Netscape users
> to adopt Firefox

> Q: What will this mean?
> A: We'll continue to release security patches for the current version
> of the browser, Netscape Navigator until February 1, 2008. After
> February 1, there will be no more active product support for Navigator
> 9, or any previous Netscape Navigator browser. This includes Netscape
> v1-v4.x, Netscape v6, Netscape v7 Suite, Netscape Browser v8, and
> Netscape Navigator/Messenger 9.

Requiescat in pace. Without ever really liking any of them, I
downloaded and used every version of Netscape's browser from 0.9 to 8.0
- I suppose I should get a copy of 9.0 for completeness' sake. If you
don't remember a time when 90% of the browsers out there were Netscape,
they were going to change the world (and arguably just made the mistake
of saying so before they actually did it).

Code4lib registration opens January 7

Registration for the 2008 Code4lib conference will open Monday, January 7,
at 10 am PST (1 pm EST). We have a great program for this year's conference
- our keynote speakers are Karen Coyle, Brewster Kahle, and Jon Udell. The
complete schedule, with links to talk descriptions, can be found at
http://code4lib.org/conference/2008/schedule.

Also, this year there will be three separate pre-conference sessions - one
on Evergreen, one on LibraryFind, and the final one on Zotero.

I will send out a reminder of the registration opening date this weekend.

(My apologies for not posting this to web4lib earlier, as previous messages
had listed today as the day registration originally was scheduled to open.)

Re: End of the line for Netscape

Thanks for the update Thomas - Netscape was my browser of choice for a
while - and it's a good reminder to all of us librarians on the ephemeral
nature of the web - now if we could just get IE to fold ...

Call for Manuscripts - Internet Reference Services Quarterly

Is your New Year's resolution to publish in a peer-reviewed journal? Are you currently using web
technologies to deliver services and enhance the experiences of your users? Have you conducted a study or
analyzed a trend concerning the use or application of web technologies in libraries? Consider
submitting a manuscript to us!

Internet Reference Services Quarterly (IRSQ), a peer-reviewed journal published by Haworth/Taylor and
Francis, welcomes the submission of manuscripts for its next issue. Don't let the word "reference" in the
title fool you. IRSQ highlights the theory and practice behind emerging Internet services, sources and
resources in all areas of librarianship. Research-based studies, case studies of successful services
or programs, and authoritative articles highlighting best practices are welcome.

Topics of interest include: tags and folksonomies, social bookmarking, wikis, mash-ups, XML
applications, digital copyright law, open source solutions, next generation catalogs, electronic
resource management systems, Facebook and MySpace modules and interactions, personalization of
library products or services, search engine technologies, information services for cell phones or
iPods, podcasting and YouTube-ing, Internet gaming and virtual worlds, Internet security, plagiarism
in an online world, virtual reference, web-based instruction and streaming video and audio.

Submissions should follow the guidelines for manuscript format and preparation available at
http://www.haworthpress.com/journals/instructionsforauthors.asp. All submissions should be
accompanied by a Manuscript Submission and Copyright Transfer form, available at http://www.haworthpressinc.com/pdfs/jmanuscript.pdf.

All accepted manuscripts will be published in the journal's next issue, Volume 13, No. 4. The due date for
submission of manuscripts is February 1, 2008; however, we are always looking for good submissions and
would consider manuscript at any time during the year. For more information or manuscript submission
questions, please contact Christopher Cox at
coxcn@...<mailto:coxcn@...> or at the
address below. We look forward to reading your work and having the opportunity to share it with other librarians.

Sincerely,
