Re: Qualifications for a Web Designer/Developer

Being a proficient programmer would certainly be helpful, and to be a 'web developer' it will be mandatory.
But you can start off with a good understanding of and experience with web based markup ie XHTML and CSS.

A 'web developer' should have proven experience in developing web applications using a programming
languages such as one of C#, VB.NET, PHP, Ruby or Perl. They should also have experience using SQL and
administering a database such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL or PostgreSQL. Optionally they
should be able to write Apache configuration scripts (like .htaccess) or configure IIS. My background as
a web developer is with the PHP programming language, MySQL database and Apache web server. A web
developer should also demonstrate a thorough understanding of HTML, XHTML _and_ CSS, with optional
experience in Javascript and Actionscript. Any web developer who is placed in a senior position should
have a good ability to write project specifications, requirements and proposals and otherwise act as a
project manager.

A 'web designer' does not necessarily have the programming and database skills of a web developer, but a
little bit of understanding helps as a web designer may be required to work on the same project as a
developer. A web designer should have a good eye for design; some sort of graphic or multimedia design
background may be good. A web designer should demonstrate a thorough understanding of HTML, XHTML _and_
CSS, and experience using them in projects. Programming skills in Javascript and Actionscript (for
Flash) are highly recommended but not mandatory. A web designer should be able to edit bare HTML and CSS
code with or without the use of Dreamweaver.

You may want to begin with XHTML and CSS. HTML, XHTML, CSS and Javascript are languages that all web
professionals should know and will benefit from. Once you go beyond that into web development, or the
other direction into multimedia design such as Flash, then you can specialise more.

RE: Downloadable audiobooks - Windows Media Player for theMacintosh?

I'd be VERY interested to know if Mac (OS Leopard?) users could run
Windows Media Player and listen to downloadable eAudiobook since one of
my biggest peeves with our libraries is paying for something that
doesn't work with a majority of our patrons' technology of choice. The
platform wars are killing me.

For those California Libraries that are CALIFA members, I heard on good
authority that some eAudiobook solution for Mac/iPod users is not far
down the pike.

Best, Michele

We get complaints from time to time about Mac users not being able to
use downloadable audiobooks on their Macs or iPods.

Re: Downloadable audiobooks - Windows Media Player for theMacintosh?

Hi Michele,

Leopard (10.5) is the newer version of OS X due out this month.
While I don't have a copy of it yet, I am pretty sure that the files
will not play on the newer OS, the same with the current OS (10.4 -
Tiger)

Apple users have to rely on a third party ("Flip4Mac") to provide
Windows Media support, as Microsoft has stopped making and supporting
new versions of Windows Media Player for the Mac. This, of course,
means that Apple users do not have access to Microsoft's proprietary
DRM formats for playback on their operating system of choice.

The iPod currently has no way of playing Windows Media files of any
shape or size.

The new advances in running Windows on a Mac are not much help here
either. There are basically three choices:

1.) Install Windows through "Boot Camp": This sets up a separate
partition of your hard-drive that contains Windows. To use this,
users need to reboot their machine into Windows (which means you
can't do any of your 'normal' work if OS X is your chosen operating
system.) It requires a full license of XP or Vista, though, so you
will need to pay for this privilege.

2.) Install Windows through a virtualization technology such as
VMWare and Parallels. This allows you to 'boot' Windows in a window
on your Mac while running OS X. This is a more elegant solution than
Boot Camp, but it also requires a legitimate license of XP or Vista,

Sounds like you're really expecting a lot from your user. I'd give 'em
a star if any of them accomplished the task.

The iPod currently has no way of playing Windows Media files of any
  shape or size.
While this is true, iTunes will convert non-DRM windows audio files into a format that the iPod can play. You
lose some audio quality with this conversion process but it wouldn't be noticeable to most people.

Also, I read over and over on this list (but not in this specific post) that Audible.com is not iPod
compatible (and no one ever seems to correct this). I'm not sure why people think this. I have only ever
owned/used an iPod for audio (and now video) files and get items from Audible.com (for personal use) and
play them on my iPod just fine. Am I misunderstanding what people mean when that's stated? There's
certainly no technology issue at play here but perhaps there's a policy/licensing one?

Cheers,
