Re: Joomla users?

Hey all,

Here's a library in our area that recently went live with Joomla:

You might get in touch with their webmaster.

IM Reference using Google Talk?

Hello--

We're investigating using Google Talk for IM Reference. Are any of you
using it? If so, I'd be very interested in picking your brains about the
good, the bad, and the ugly.

Thanks

RE: IM Reference using Google Talk?

Well,

I use Gtalk, and it has a great benefit of voice chat. It's a pretty
simple interface. But to my knowledge, it can only talk to other Gtalk
users. It also stores chat conversations in your Gmail account, but you
can make chat sessions off the record if need be.

public libraries with a focused technology bent

hi web4lib people -

i'm currently quite happy at my public library job helping youth and adults
use the internet, but i'd like to be doing more digital storytelling, podcasting
and video on the web as part of my regular job. i currently teach these on the
side just once a week.

my background is as an elementary educator and macintosh computer
professional, but i love linux and am very comfortable on windows. i'd like to
be at a public library where technology empowerment of the community is one of
the core functions of the library -- rather than a side-function.

i'd be interested in hearing from any public libraries who are moving in
that direction. even if your library is not hiring, i'd still like to be in touch.

we can walk more timidly or more boldly into the future, and i fit myself
more into the latter camp.

Re: Need efficient way to post "library closing" message

SSIs add no significant processing time with today's server
technology. Every single page on our library website has one or more
SSIs (footer, navigation). They are the simplest solution for what you
want to do because they are easy to maintain (edit a single text file)
and don't require anything special at the user's end (display happens
at the server end rather than in the browser).

If your server isn't capable of SSIs, Bill's solution of iframes is a
good one, but is somewhat browser dependent. I wouldnt' worry about it
though as most modern browsers support them and it is an easy way to
pull content into a page.

Javascripts that display RSS feeds are, on one hand, easy to maintain
(usually a by-product of a news blog) and, on the other, extremely
vulnerable to user preferences -- i.e., if the user has javascript
turned off, the message isn't displayed.

RE: IM Reference using Google Talk?

GTalk will actually connect to other XMPP/Jabber services, such as
LiveJournal's LJ Talk and your local government/campus enterprise IM
server. There's a poorly list of public servers at
https://www.xmpp.net/servers.

It would be sweet if other commercial IM providers would offer XMPP
connectivity, but then, they would lose their exclusivity. Maybe they
could make it up by pushing us more ads based on our conversations?

Had to chuckle when reading this.. Server-Side Includes were invented by in
1993 by Charles Henrich, then a student at Michigan State. SSIs weren't a
strain for 1993 server technology (though the idea was controversial for
some at the time). :-)

what happened to PBWiki ?

We have our Wyoming Authors Database hosted with PBWiki
(http://wiki.wyomingauthors.org/ which forwards to
http://wyomingauthors.pbwiki.com/ ) but PBWiki isn't working right
now, and if you go to the main site (pbwiki.com), it says that the site
was successfully registered with Joker.com . Looking at the WHOIS
record, David Weekly, founder and CEO of PBWiki, is also the contact for
PBWiki.com and Coceve, Inc. and the record was modified today.

So, anyone know of anything? They sure haven't notified us, as paying
subscribers to the PBWiki service!

Collection of International AIDS Posters Available Online

of possible interest to taxonomists on the list:

Collection of International AIDS Posters Available
Online

The UCLA Library launched an online collection of more
than 600 AIDS
posters from countries around the world on Friday,
December 1, 2006 at
http://digital.library.ucla.edu/aidsposters. The
release of this digital
project has been scheduled in conjunction with World
AIDS Day.

"The collection provides a fascinating insight into
the many approaches
that have been used to try to modify risk behaviors,"
said Roger Detels,
MD, MS, UCLA professor of epidemiology and infectious
diseases. "The
posters range from terrifying to amusing and reflect
the many cultures
from which they have been drawn, which include
national cultures and
risk group cultures. The collection should be of
interest to anyone
interested in the history of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and
attempts to
control it."
