Helping Students Select Graduate Programs

Greetings All-

I am working with my colleague Jim Rothenberg to write a guide to
sociology majors, which among other things, will introduce strategies of
selecting graduate schools. Beyond referring students to the ASA guide
to graduate programs and the Peterson's Guides, we would appreciate
reading strategies to that you have shared with your students on how to
determine which programs and universities to gravitate towards.

With appreciation in advance.

community college teaching

Hi all,
I am co-organizing a workshop for the 2007 ASA meeting on teaching at
community colleges. Topics might include: pedagogical innovation,
challenges unique to community colleges, working with marginalized
students, etc.
Please write me off-list if you are interested in taking part.
Thanks,
Linda

Stats textbook: Adventures in Social Research

Has anyone used Babbie et al Adventures in Social Research for a stats course?

I'm teaching Social Statistics for the first time this Spring (we start in February). I am leaning toward using this Babbie book (new edition out this month) because I want to teach an applied and conceptual stats course as opposed to a math-heavy stats course. For those who has used the text, I am wondering to what extent you felt the need to supplement this text with another statistical text (possibly a short primer on the math/logic behind the statistics)?

Any general comments about using this text (or why you chose not to use this text) would also be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Brett,

Here's what I wrote previously in teachsoc about the previous edition of
this text:

"If you and your students will have easy access to SPSS, you might take a
look at Babbie, Halley & Zaino's Adventures in Social Research (Pine Forge
ISBN 0-7619-8758-4). The authors lead students though the use of basic
statistics to analyze data. I think they do a good job of teaching
students how to approach research quantitatively. And there are no pesky
equations or formulas :-> I used this in a one-semester undergraduate
class for students with no background in statistics (and damned little in
social research methods). Most liked it, though several of the better
students wanted more detail on how the statistics "worked."

You might want to check out this text as a possible supplement to give
more background:

Roberta Garner. The Joy of Stats: A Short Guide to Introductory Statistics
in the Social Sciences. Broadview Press. I have a copy at home, but
haven't done more than glance at it. You can find more about it at
http://www.broadviewpress.com/bvbooks.asp?BookID=717.

Best,
James Cassell

medical soc material query

Hi everyone:

In finalizing my medical soc syllabi for spring, I realized that the course
seems heavy on material that the students have remarked is, well, depressing
(e.g., "Mama Might Be Better Off Dead"). I'm looking for additional material
(short readings, videos, exercises, etc.) that might be a bit more "upbeat".

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Kathy

Re: medical soc material query

Hey, Kathy

I am a bit ignorant (maybe more than a bit, but need to ask this question first to determine that) about what is covered in a med soci class; could you educate those of us who are ignorant (varying levels, I suppose, not to indict anyone else but me)? I have some ideas, but I am not sure if they are what you are looking for.

Thanks!

Re: medical soc material query

Hi John:

Although the topic can take a variety of approaches toward covering issues
surrounding the social aspects of health, illness, and medicine. Thus it can
tackle inequalities, specific issues such as HIV/AIDS, research ethics (e.g.,
Tuskegee), bioethics, etc. I'm taking more of an intro type survey of the
filed.

A to-be-modified draft intro for the syllabus says:
Medicine, health, and illness can be studied sociologically. To do so means to
understand that our very definitions of "health" and "illness," as well as the
forms and functions of "medicine," are strongly shaped by social and cultural
forces. One of the largest fields of sociology, medical sociology offers a
valuable perspective into how health and illness are far more than biology.

This course is designed to provide students an introduction to sociological
perspectives on the study of health, illness, and health care. Topics
addressed in the course include: individual and population health patterns;
the structures and organization of health care systems and medical encounters;
the roles of patients, health care providers, and others in the medical arena;
economics and health care; health care systems in the U.S. and globally; and
issues shaping the future of health, illness, and medicine.
