Fwd: Collaboration opportunity

Openmrs is developed and Dr. Paul Farmer (Harvard Med and Haiti and
McCarthur Genius Award Winner) is one of their supporters. It is also
a project taken by HFOSS group at Trnity College.

Dear Professor Mukai,

I work with a non-profit hospital in India that is building a health
information system and is looking for volunteers (students, graduate
students, and/or faculty) interested in collaborating. Would you be
able to circulate this within the department?

Many thanks,
 Daniel

A leading non-profit healthcare organization in rural India, JSS
(http://jssbilaspur.org/about/), is building an open-source health
information system and is seeking a few energetic, talented
volunteers. In a catchment area of about 300,000 JSS operates a
multinodal hospital, three remote sub-centers and an extensive public
health outreach program with over 100 community health workers. Its
founding doctors hail from AIIMS, the premier teaching hospital in
south Asia. To further their vision of high-quality healthcare in
resource-constrained environments, JSS has set forth the ambitious
goal of transitioning from its current paper-based recordkeeping
system to one operating on cloud-based servers and tablet computers.

We are looking for students or faculty members interested in
collaborating. This project will undoubtedly benefit tens of thousands
of people in the near term and many more in the long term.

This project not only involves building a health information system
for JSS, using the data model of the robust and field-tested OpenMRS
platform (www.openmrs.org), but also making this system modular,
extensible, freely and widely available for other organizations to
implement as easily as possible in the future. We are designing the
system to be completely cross-platform and are prioritizing the mobile
device; users interact with the application through web-based services
that are accessed by a basic browser.  We are using widely-used
languages such as Javascript, widely-used web UI libraries such as
JQuery UI and robust, offline-cached database design to make our
design and implementation fault-tolerant of unreliable devices and
infrastructure.  In a sense, we are trying to make a canonical
opensource point-of-care system, one that will hopefully be the seed
for a large number of such developments in the future.

The project already has a small group of very talented programmers in
the US and India, but is looking for an additional handful of skilled
developers to round out the team.  The core development timeline for
the first phase pilot project extends from the beginning of October
through early January. Opportunities for longer term collaborations
are available as well.

Extensive documentation about the project is available for those
wanting to learn more. For additional information about JSS itself
please see the link above and this news item about its work:

Universities foster the next big tech innovation through open source

http://www.zdnet.com/news/universities-foster-the-next-big-tech-innovation-through-open-source/6313908

"While many technical innovations are produced by massive teams of
developers at industry giants such as Google and Microsoft, a number
of game-changing technologies are sprouting from grass roots efforts
at universities. Through the advent of open source software, multiple
developers at colleges around the globe are able to contribute code
and innovate new developments without a penny of commercial
investment. Tech leaders and investors alike are surprised to learn
how the next big breakthrough in technology may not come from their
own development teams, but from groups of students and educators
collaborating through the Internet."

Neil Gaiman on Piracy + 4chan Graphic Novel Piracy

While I was doing the reading for today, I thought of this video in which Neil Gaiman explains that piracy actually helps book sales:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Qkyt1wXNlI.

Also, a story I followed a while ago about an indie comic, "Underground," which is being given away for free after one of the creators had a discussion with people who were posting scans on 4chan:
http://www.comicsalliance.com/2010/10/19/underground-artist-steve-lieber-wins-over-4chan-with-love-and/

http://www.undergroundthecomic.com/2010/10/whole-book-for-free-or-learning-something-from-4chan/

tl;dr: Neil Gaiman is awesome, and everyone wins if you give your stuff away.

Re: Neil Gaiman on Piracy + 4chan Graphic Novel Piracy

Hi Aileen,

This is very interesting.
Thanks for sharing it with us.

This is what Cory Doctorow's has been referring
to when he repeats Tim O'Reilly statement:

"The big problem isn't piracy, it's obscurity"
http://radar.oreilly.com/2006/08/piracy-is-progressive-taxation.html

Doctorow's is one of the progressive authors
who sees ebooks as a natural marketing tool

http://craphound.com/littlebrother/about/
http://www.mediabistro.com/galleycat/cory-doctorow-it-is-impossible-to-monetize-obscurity_b11775

It is also worth noting Neil Gaiman's point about the
fact that we discover books through recommendations
from friends, family and colleges.

Talking about Cory Doctorow, he was a keynote speaker at Siggraph
2011. Here is the 45 min video (30 min speech+15 min Q&A) and the full

Open Access Week & Organizations with Clarity of Purpose

You may find interesting:

1) Upcoming "Open Access Week": Oct  24-30.

2) PLoS Expanded Mission,
as we discussed in class, as opposed to IEEE and ACM,
PLoS is a living organization with clear sense of purpose.

PLoS Mission:

“Accelerating progress in science and medicine
by leading a transformation in research communication.”

The mission also includes aims in three specific areas, which are to:

  • Eliminate unnecessary barriers to immediate availability, access, and use of research
  • Pursue a publishing strategy that drives openness, quality, and integrity
  • Develop innovative approaches to the assessment, organization, and reuse of ideas and data

Open Access Week 2011 opens October 24

Fifth annual event draws broad global participation, highlights deep community commitment to Open Access

Washington, DC – Open Access Week, the annual event celebrating the global movement towards Open Access (OA) to research and scholarship, kicks off for the fifth time on Monday, October 24.  Coordinated by SPARC and organized by more than 2,000 advocates in countries around the world, the event provides an opportunity to learn about the benefits of Open Access, share new ideas and strategies, and inspire wider participation in establishing Open Access as the norm in scholarly communication.

Every year, research funders, academic institutions, libraries research organizations, non-profits, businesses, and others use Open Access Week as a valuable platform to convene community events as well as to announce significant action on Open Access.  The Week has served as a launching pad for new open-access publication funds, open-access policies, and papers reporting on the societal and economic benefits of OA.

This year, programs highlighting publishing and rights management choices for faculty authors, use of new media, and opportunities created by re-mixing and re-using scholarly materials are on tap. Open Educational Resources are another key topic, as is open-source technology. Campuses will be presenting a sweeping range of events, from the Harvard University-sponsored “Yana,” an open-source template for scholarly journals to develop mobile applications to the University of Utah event diving into new media, fair use, and pop culture.

Students will once again play a major role, hosting panel discussions, workshops, poster campaigns, Web casts and movie screenings to understand Open Access and its relevance to the everyday student. Event’s such as “SHOW (Share/OpenAccess/Worldwide),” at the university campus in Rijeka, Croatia, will introduce students to Creative Commons licensing, Open Projects, the Open Content movement, the Open Access movement, and the Right to Research Coalition.

Participation in this highly successful event continues to grow. This year, there are over 2,000 individuals in more than 110 countries registered in the Open Access Week social network at openaccessweek.org. Participation remains strong throughout Europe and North America and will be complemented by new activities in regions as diverse as Algeria, Gambia, Iceland, Iraq, and Sudan. The global nature of this event is captured nicely by the interactive Open Access Week member map, available on the Web site.

To help support local programming, SPARC provides a suite of resources, including a video series featuring leading voices in research and digital technology. This year’s feature is Brewster Kahle, founder and Chairman of the Internet Archive. Kahle suggests the time is ripe for Open Access; now that the “plumbing” of the Internet is in place, “We have to move beyond the mainframe model and the subscription or the license model,” he says. “It has to be so that things are... shared widely.” The video may be viewed and downloaded at http://blip.tv/sparc-north-america/brewster-kahle-5653389.

The full collection of SPARC videos for Open Access Week, including Dr. Harold Varmus, Director of the U.S. National Cancer Institute, Dr. Cameron Neylon, a biophysicist and open research advocate; Dr. Mona Nemer, professor and vice-president for research at the University of Ottawa; students, librarians, teachers, research funders, and others are available on the openaccessweek.org Web site.

Open Access Week is organized by SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), with the generous support of our 2011 sponsors: the Public Library of Science, <at> mire, and Springer Open. Find activities on your campus, at your institution, or in your region – or join to participate – through the Web site at www.openaccessweek.org.

<p>Washington,&nbsp;DC &ndash; Open Access Week, the annual event celebrating the global movement towards&nbsp;Open Access (OA) to research&nbsp;and scholarship, kicks off for the fifth time on&nbsp;Monday, October 24.&nbsp;&nbsp;Coordinated by&nbsp;SPARC and organized by more than 2,000&nbsp;advocates in countries around the world,&nbsp;the event provides&nbsp;an&nbsp;opportunity to learn about the benefits of Open Access, share&nbsp;new ideas and&nbsp;strategies, and inspire wider participation in establishing Open Access as the norm&nbsp;in scholarly communication.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Every&nbsp;year, research funders, academic institutions, libraries research&nbsp;organizations, non-profits, businesses, and others use&nbsp;Open Access Week as a&nbsp;valuable platform to convene community events as well as to announce significant&nbsp;action on Open&nbsp;Access.&nbsp;&nbsp; The Week has served as a launching pad&nbsp;for new open-access publication funds, open-access policies, and papers&nbsp;reporting on the societal and economic benefits of OA.</p>

<p>This&nbsp;year, programs highlighting publishing and rights management choices for&nbsp;faculty authors, use of new media, and&nbsp;opportunities created by re-mixing and&nbsp;re-using scholarly materials are on tap. Open Educational Resources are another&nbsp;key&nbsp;topic, as is open-source technology. Campuses will be presenting a sweeping&nbsp;range of events, from the Harvard University-sponsored &ldquo;Yana,&rdquo; an open-source&nbsp;template for scholarly journals to develop mobile applications to the&nbsp;University of Utah event&nbsp;diving into new media, fair use, and pop culture.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Students&nbsp;will once again play a major role, hosting panel discussions, workshops, poster&nbsp;campaigns, Web casts and movie&nbsp;screenings to understand Open Access and its&nbsp;relevance to the everyday student. Event&rsquo;s such as &ldquo;SHOW&nbsp;(Share/OpenAccess/Worldwide),&rdquo; at&nbsp;the university campus in Rijeka, Croatia, will introduce students to Creative&nbsp;Commons&nbsp;licensing, Open Projects, the Open Content movement, the Open Access&nbsp;movement, and the Right to Research Coalition.</p>

<p>Participation&nbsp;in this highly successful event continues to grow. This year, there are over&nbsp;2,000 individuals in more than 110&nbsp;countries registered in the Open Access Week&nbsp;social network at <a href="http://openaccessweek.org" target="_blank">openaccessweek.org</a>. Participation remains strong throughout&nbsp;Europe and North America and will be complemented by new activities in regions&nbsp;as diverse as Algeria, Gambia, Iceland, Iraq,&nbsp;and Sudan. The global nature of&nbsp;this event is captured nicely by the interactive Open Access Week member map,&nbsp;available on&nbsp;the Web site.</p>
