HISTORY

CURE began in July 2001,[1] in Delhi, and has grown to a membership of several hundreds, mostly students.

In February 2007, CURE reported to the Supreme Court appointed Raghavan committee on ways to prevent
ragging in Indian universities,[1] highlighting the prevalence of physical and sexual abuse in the name
of ragging.[2] CURE also highlighted institutional unwillingness to acknowledge ragging,[3] citing
loss of reputation as their reason.

[Ragging News From Indian Colleges] Engineering student seeks compensation fo...

CHENNAI: Alleging that he was ragged and thrown from the fourth floor of the hostel building by some senior students, an engineering student has moved the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the State government to pay an interim compensation of Rs.5 lakh for treatment.

Justice K.Venkataraman ordered notice regarding admission returnable in two weeks. He also allowed private notice.

In his petition, Shoban Babu of Melur in Madurai district stated that he was doing first year in mechanical engineering at the Hindustan College of Engineering, Otthakaal Mandapam, Coimbatore, and staying in the hostel.

On October 22, 2009 some identifiable senior students demanded money from him for a party. When he refused, he was ragged and also threatened.

He complained to the hostel warden, who assured him that he would take action against the seniors. The same day, the seniors took him to the fourth floor and assaulted him.

When he raised an alarm, other students staying in the hostel came to his rescue. The petitioner alleged that he was thrown from the fourth floor. He became unconscious, his spinal cord was injured and his leg fractured.

He regained consciousness and was able to speak only on January 10.

He prayed the court to direct the authorities to entrust the CB CID with the case for a fair investigation.

[Ragging News From Indian Colleges] Ragging claims student’s life

Last Updated : 07 Feb 2010 08:10:16 AM IST

Express News Service

PUDUCHERRY: A First-year student of an arts college, who had immolated himself on Friday allegedly due to ragging, succumbed to burns on Saturday. According to the police, the college principal and three senior students would be taken for questioning.

This is the second incident after the Andhra Pradesh ragging case in August last year when four students along with a principal - for inaction - were arrested for ragging a student. Only this time, the victim died. The incident occurred despite the Supreme Court’s verdict declaring ragging a crime and a separate Bill following a committee report on prevention of ragging.

The victim’s brother Muthu said Sridhar, a first-year B Com student of Siddhar Sivagnani College of Arts for Men in Bomiyarpalayam, was reportedly abused and ill-treated in public on the pretext of ragging by three senior students. Following this, Sridhar and his father complained to the principal.

“The principal had assured them that he would look into the matter and asked Sridhar to attend his classes. But the principal let off the students with only a warning. Angered at Sridhar taking the issue to the principal, the three students continued to abuse Sridhar. Unable to bear the humiliation, he committed suicide,” alleged Muthu. Muthu said Sridhar had called him saying that he had some problems at the college. But before Muthu reached home to meet him, his brother had set himself ablaze.

According to police sources, as per the prevention of ragging Bill, the principal was required to report incidents of ragging to the police immediately. The principal of the college Natarajan, was not available for comment.

[Ragging News From Indian Colleges] Engg students beaten up by seniors, no ca...

CHENNAI: In a violent incident of ragging, a group of students from Bharath (deemed) University in Selaiyur, near Tambaram, were brutally beaten up by their seniors on Wednesday night for refusing to give them money. Both the university, which is owned by the relatives of a Union minister, and the police have refused to register complaints, the injured students said.

Vishwa Ranjan, a first-year student of electrical and electronics engineering, claimed that Manish Kumar, a second-year student of mechanical engineering, had demanded Rs 500 from him on Wednesday morning. When he refused, Kumar and a few of his friends allegedly beat him up before other students came to his rescue.

Hours later, more than 50 senior students descended on the rented house he shared with three of his friends in Selaiyur. He said the seniors, who came armed with hockey sticks and steel rods, broke glasspanes of windows and the rear windscreen of a car. "It was to teach us a lesson for the morning’s incident," said R Kashif Seraj, a first-year student who lives in the house.

The seniors went on to thrash their juniors and broke chairs and a television set, the injured students said.

Police nabbed five of the seniors, but they were let off on Thursday morning after university authorities reportedly assured them that they would sort out the matter. The inaction of the authorities comes in the face of Supreme Court guidelines which make the head of the institution and the local police chief primarily responsible for action against ragging.
