FW: Persian History text

I would recommend A History of Iran: Empire of the Mind by Michael Axworthy (2010). It is both well-written and competent.

Dear colleagues:

A faculty member at my institution has asked me to recommend a text on Persian/Iranian history (that would include pre-Islamic, Islamic and modern history) text suitable for undergraduates. Would anyone have a recommendation that I might pass along to him? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Cordially,

Thanks

-A.

FW: help with a Kazakh title

Our Slavic cataloger forwarded the query below to me. Can anyone on this list help transliterate the Kazakh title in Arabic script?

If so, can send the reply to Kirill Tolpygo… and copy me!

If someone would be willing to help with cataloging an interesting Kazakh title, I would greatly appreciate it.

The item was published in Moscow in 1924. It is a “new” primer of “kazak-kirgiz” language. There is parallel title and pub. info on the piece in Russian, but the rest of the item is in roman or Arabic script (sometimes with parallel text, sometimes not). The item is only 12 p. long.

I would need help with romanization of the Arabic data on the t.p. (and/or cover) as well as with making sense of the roman data (e.g. how to deal with the special roman Kazakh letters – for example, would you follow the Cyrillic Kazak romanization to get Janga alapbi (with ligatures around “g” and breve over the “i”?)

Many thanks in advance to anyone willing to help. And yes, I am aware that this is a primer, so technically I should have all the info about how the scripts work – still I think that someone who knows more about this would be able to do this so much faster. J

Also, I am willing to bet that the phrase at head of title says “Proletarians of all countries, unite!”.

Dear Shayee,

Below is my responce to Kirill I sent to weeks ago.

Akram

Dear Larisa and Kirill,

The problem is that, there is no romanization table established by LC for Central Asian Languages in Arabic script.  When I was a cataloger I used to make up, then enter parallel vernacular field using Arabic keyboard. So, my recommendation is:

100 _ _ Nāzir Turahqūl ūli (see: http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A2%D1%8E%D1%80%D1%8F%D0%BA%D1%83%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%B2,_%D0%9D%D0%B0%D0%B7%D0%B8%D1%80_%D0%A2%D1%8E%D1%80%D1%8F%D0%BA%D1%83%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B8%D1%87)

245 _ _ Qāzāq-qirghiz üchun jāngā alipbi /  Nāzir Turahqūl ūli.

Best wishes,
Akram

Inauiry about "cartoons" regarding oil politics

Dear Colleagues:

One of our postdocs is working on a book about International Oil Politics (in the ME) between 1967 – 1974.  He’s looking for “cartoons” or political illustrations from Arabic-language Middle Eastern newspapers or magazines from that period.  I’ve found a lot of resources for him from non-ME, non-Arabic papers (US and European newsmagazines, for example), but he want a ME regional selection as well, if possible.  Can any of you recommend some sources for me to pass him?  (I’m not sure Yale can provide these materials, but…)

Many thanks,

FW: looking for a book published in Tehran

Dear MELAnetters,

I would appreciate any help you can give in locating the illusive reference below from a UCB patron. I tried various searches using various spellings of the keywords, publisher information, dates of publication… etc.  I came up empty.

Do you know if such a book even exists?

Hi Ms. Khanaka,

I am a graduate student writing my dissertation on Ruhollah Khomeini, and I have been having trouble finding a book, Asrar-i Hazar Saleh, written by Ali Akbar Hakamizadeh in Persian. The title, in English, is "Thousand-Year Secrets" (or, alternately, I have seen it translated as Thousand-Year-Old Secrets, or Secrets of a Thousand Years, or Thousand Year Mysteries--and perhaps there are more variations).  Both the title and the name of the author have been transliterated in various ways (the title as, possibly among other variations, "Asrare Hezar Saleh," "Asrar-e Hazar Saleh," and "Asrar-i Hazar Saleh"), and I have seen the author's last name misspelled as Hakimzadeh. The book was published in Tehran, and it was listed in the bibliography of Said Amir Arjomand's book Authority and Political Culture in Shi'ism as having been published by a company called Peyman in 1322/1943, although other authors have not listed it in this way (listing neither this publishing company nor this date). This is the pamphlet/short book to which Khomeini responds in his1944 book, Kashf Al-Asrar.

I have checked interlibrary loan and have not found it there either. Would it be possible for the UC Berkeley Library to buy the book?

Please let me know if you need anymore information.

Thanks in advance for your help,
