Arabic transliteration, from old to Unicode

This is part an announcement, part request, concerning transliteration fonts.
Until recently, most of us had to use various
specialized fonts for Arabic transliteration,
fonts that mostly our colleagues or publishers
did not have. Now that there is a standardized
solution ("Unicode fonts"), we are asked to use
these instead, and we should; it is great step
forward.

However, that leaves the question of what to do
with our old documents, or documents we still
receive from colleagues using old-style fonts we
do not posess. To help solve this, I have made up
a set of "macros" for Microsoft Word 2004/Mac and
NisusWriter Pro, which convert transliteration
characters from some 30-40 different pre-Unicode
fonts I found, to Unicode. Run the macro, and the
old document becomes Unicode-based. These macros
can be dowloaded from
<http://www.smi.uib.no/ksv/convert.html>

That was the announcement. The request is that my
information about several of these fonts is
sketchy, and I have not been able to test many of
them in "real-life" situations with actual
documents. Thus, if the issue sounds interesting,
I would ask people who think this may be useful,
and who have documents written in some of the old
fonts listed, to try out the macros and report
back to me errors, mistakes, or failures, so that

ISO certification for religious & spiritual care providing agencies

A Hindu temple and a Sikh Gurudwara have received ISO certification; and they comply with the ISO standards.

A request was sent to the above organizations. There is no response from that end.

So, does anyone know:

(a) if are there any other organizations that have received such certificates;

(b) whom to contact i.e., name, mailing & e-mail address, etc. for a certification; and

(c) where to find the procedure for requirements / criteria for this certification.

Best regards,

Dr. Mohamed Taher

Re: ISO certification for religious & spiritual care providing agencies

And what exactly is ISO certifying? Their standards generally deal with
technical issues, manufacturing processes, computer and
telecommunications technology, etc. But you may contact the
International Organization for Standardization from their web site:
http://www.iso.org.

Sure. Just put "ISO 9001:2000" in Google.com or your favorite search
engine, and lots of stuff pops up. A fairly good article on Wikipedia is
found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_9000

Rather than put this up on the webpage, since the deadline for this is in only two days, I thought I'd rather
forward it to the listserv. This is of interest to anyone who might be thinking of attending the RBMS
preconference at ALA this summer. Please feel free to share it with interested colleagues.

Yours,

Library and Kaust in Digital Partnership

via Library of Congress: News on 4/14/08

The Library of Congress and the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) today announced a partnership in the history of science in the Arab and Islamic worlds. The Library and KAUST will jointly convene an international advisory committee of leading scholars and curators to map out a strategy for identifying, selecting, digitizing, cataloging, annotating, and promoting scholarly research about manuscripts and other rare and unique materials relating to science in the Arab and Islamic worlds, and for including these materials in the World Digital Library (WDL) and other digital library projects.
