Souvenir of Istanbul : photographs from the Yildiz Palace albums

We have received a copy of Souvenir of Istanbul : photographs from the Yildiz Palace albums, published by
Akkok, 2007 (LCCN 2007492232) Our copy is missing pages 337-344; duplicates of pages 97-104 are inserted
where 337-344 should be.

Does anyone have a copy which is perfect or do your copies also have this defect?

Thanks,
Sarah

al-Mawrid article

Esteemed colleagues:

Thanks to all who replied to my query about the article from
al-Mawrid. I have been contacted by several librarians who are able
to provide it, so please do not expend any further efforts on the
matter.

Gratefully,

"[The] practice of scholarship and teaching is a matter of public
good, not commercial exigency... In a scientific age, when secular
knowledge must undergird secular understanding, independent
scholar-teachers are more critical than ever before. When they and
their training are redefined as dispensable, valued only for their
instrumentality in the competitive arena of vocational skill
training, academic freedom becomes a privilege of powerful
universities and status-laden faculty. Everyone else would be
disposable, and a disposable faculty would not speak truth to power,
but rather do its bidding." (Mary Burgan, Whatever Happened to the
Faculty?)

to experience it." (Max Frisch, Homo Faber)

The Independent: Robert Fisk: The curious case of the forged biography

A friend (bickettb@...) has sent you an article:

Robert Fisk: The curious case of the forged biography
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/fisk/robert-fisk-the-curious-case-of-the-forged-biography-776775.html
It arrived for me in Beirut under plain cover, a brown envelope containing a small, glossy paperback in
Arabic, accompanied by a note from an Egyptian friend. "Robert!" it began. "Did you
really write this?"

Apologies if you have already seen this...
cheers, Brenda E. Bickett

The Lesley Wilkins Award Fund

Dear MELANET-L members,

Last fall the Executive Board of MELA set up a new fund to enable an
award in honor of Lesley Wilkins, one of the most energetic and avid
members of MELA and its activities. The board set a goal of building
the fund to a minimum of $10,000 so that the award could be funded
perpetually. By my estimation we have only achieved just over 25% of
this goal. I would like to challenge ALL of you to make a donation to
this fund, even if you are not a member of MELA. I would also like to
make a further challenge for those organizations where Lesley worked
(Harvard Law, Harvard Widener, Boston Public, Sultan Qaboos, AUC) to
reach out to all in those organizations and come up with more $$$ to
meet our goal before MELA next meets in November.

John

International conference on Libraries from a Human Rights Perspective

http://www.rchrs.ps/aboutC.html

Ramallah Center for Human Rights Studies

International conference on Libraries from a Human Rights Perspective

Ramallah - Palestine
31 March - 2 April 2008

This conference - organized by RCHRS in cooperation with IFLA - will
highlight the importance of achieving human rights related to library work
and these rights include: freedom of expression, freedom of access to
information, tolerance, acceptance of the other, respect of diversity
and cultural rights. When examining these rights, it looks very obvious
that all of them are direct to library missions and without raising
awareness of these rights inside libraries, the latter will not be
able to provide services that respect human development needs.

For registration or more information on this conference, please
contact us: <dweikat@...>

The Program and other information is posted on the Conference web site
http://www.rchrs.ps/aboutC.html

Conference comments ...

Claudia Lux, IFLA President 2007-2009:
"Free access to information and human relations have always been
at the top of IFLA's objectives, as librarians play key roles in
furthering these values"

charge for the ALA/ALCTS working group

This is the second document forwarded to MELANET by Magda El-Sherbini.
--Joan Biella

++++++++++++
Charge for the Working Group
for Defining Specific Scripts and Language Support in Library Computer
Applications

Goal:
To create standards that facilitate a common understanding between
librarians and vendors and serve as a prioritization tool to be used by
system vendors, an evaluation tool against which functionalities of
library systems can be measured, and a standardization tool to
facilitate exchange between library and other systems.

Charge:

To define requirements for the support of each script and language in
library computer applications, including not only in the various modules
of integrated library systems, but also in other library-related
programs, such as Interlibrary Loan systems, Next-generation OPACs or
Course Management software. These requirements will facilitate library
system development and evaluation and provide guidance to system
implementers.

The issues to be addressed by the Group include the following:
·	Create a checklist that supports all scripts and languages, and
that can be the basis for requirements for specific scripts or
languages.
·	Determine the scripts to be documented, including Latin.

An article about the Prophet Muhammad in the English-language Wikipedia has become the subject of an online protest in the last few weeks because of its representations of Muhammad, taken from medieval manuscripts.
