Afghanistan - Code of Criminal Procedure
A patron is looking for English and Persian/Pushto texts of Afghanistan's Code of Criminal Procedure (1965, rev. 1976) and of the legislation on the office of the State Prosecutor (Saranwali). Our law library appears to have in its collection the 1976 revision of the 1965 Penal Code (Qanun-i jaza'i) in English; it also has the Code of Criminal Procedure, but only the 1965 version (not the 1976 revision) and not in English: AUTHOR: Afghanistan. TITLE : Qanun-i Ijra'at-i Jaza'i. Pushto & Persian. TITLE : Da Jaza'i Ijra'ato Qanun = Qanun-i Ijra'at-i Jaza'i. PUBL. : [Kabul, 1965 or 66]. DESCR : iii, 138, iii, 137 p. 25 cm My questions, which I hope some colleagues might be able to answer, since I'm way out of my specialty on this one: - Is there an English edition of the Code of Criminal Procedure (either the 1965 code or its 1976 revised version)? - and of the law on the office of the prosecutor? - If so, can someone point me to a library where they can be found? Thanks,

Re: Afghanistan - Code of Criminal Procedure
Dear Andras, During my June trip to Kabul I have acquired all Afghan laws i.e. civil, criminal, penal code, trade laws and Islamic jurisprudence in paperback form. These are reprints of laws from late last century (1965-1989)published in 'Rasmi Jaridah' the Afghan official gazette. The language is Pushto and Persian in parallel text. These monographs have been published by a commercial publisher at a reasonable price $3 to $5. Will get the confirmed information about Englsh translation within a couple of days. However, as the patron who inquired after these texts has informed me, the English versions of the 1976 Afghan laws that are posted on the IDLO site are "mostly unreadable, based on what looks like 10th-generation photocopies." This is why reformatting projects have to have stringent standards and quality controls. Without them, even great ideas can sometimes turn out to be useless. A source for a (readable) version of the English texts of these laws would still be appreciated. Andras

Have any MELANETers had experience with Sakhr's Arabic OCR software, ARABIC READER PLATINUM version 7? They claim a high rate of accuracy but I am skeptical. Thanks for any input. David David G.
