query: *peer-reviewed* journals in Islamic Studies...

I am posting the following on behalf of the undersigned who is
temporarily in possession of a changed e-mail address and
consequently unable to post to the list at present. Please reply
directly to him. Thanks -CJ-]

From: Alan Godlas <godlas@...>

Dear MELAnetters,

Does anyone have a list of names and addresses (and email addresses
and web-pages if possible) of *peer-reviewed* journals in Islamic
Studies that publish articles in English (but not necessarily solely
in English)? If so, please send it to me. Unfortunately, I do not
think that such a comprehensive list exists on the web. It would be
especially useful for colleagues who do not yet have tenure.

I would be happy to compile such a list and create a webpage for it.
I suppose one way to organize this would be to have two categories,
one for peer-reviewed journals specifically in Islamic Studies and
another for peer-reviewed journals that are broader or overlapping in
scope but that nevertheless commonly accept articles in Islamic
Studies and in English (such as AAR, MESA, Iranian Studies).

I already have the following Islamic Studies peer-reviewed journals
linked to my website:

Journal of Arabic and Islamic Studies, edited by Joseph N. Bell, et al.
Journal of Qur'anic Studies
The Muslim World, edited by Ibrahim M. Abu-Rabi'.
Journal of Islamic Studies, edited by Farhan Ahmed Nizami.

Re: query: *peer-reviewed* journals

The print version of Ulrichs Periodicals Directory has a section on
"Refereed Journals". If you have access to Ulrichs on the web,
"ulrichsweb.com", one of the limits you can apply to a search is
'refereed'. A list of 25 came up when I did a title keyword search on
'islam' or 'middle east'.

New Middle East librarian at Utah

Dear Colleagues,

As you may recall, the head of the Middle East library at the
University of Utah, Ragai Makar, retired 2 years ago. I, the Middle
East cataloger since 1991, was named acting head while we
conducted a search for Ragai's replacement. The search was not
successful, and the library was not in any hurry to reopen it. In
fact, I think the library admin would have been quite happy if I had
just quietly settled in as permanent head and sole Middle East
librarian, doing everything. But I argued that previously there had
essentially been two ME librarians, Ragai and myself, and that
there was still enough work for two librarians, the cataloging alone
being a full time job. I am glad to say that our library director,
Sarah Michalak, agreed with me.

We decided, however, not to join the 4 other libraries fishing in the
shallow pool of ME librarians. We are fortunate to already have
local talent. Leonard Chiarelli, currently working as adjunct librarian
in the Science library, is joining me in the Middle East library as
the ME librarian responsible for public services (reference,
instruction, etc.). No doubt many of you are already acquainted
with Leonard. He has a Ph.D. in ME history, knows Arabic, and is
an active and published scholar in ME studies.

So that's how things have shaken down at Utah. I'm being kept on
as head of the ME library, only because I have seniority in terms of
years as a librarian. I will continue to be primarily the ME
cataloger, while Leonard will handle the public aspects of the job,
and we will split collection development duties. Leonard has great
knowledge, expertise, and enthusiasm for ME librarianship and

We have a number of the diskettes here at the Hoover, but I have run a few
of them only a couple of times, years ago, for lack of enough memory on my
pc and sufficient technical knowledge. Our interest in Persian, also, has
fluctuated between minimal and less, and it was hard to justify the
time. They were supplied by Saeed Damadi, who is currently in New Jersey
and reachable at 240-453-9074. His information back home is:

Saeed is using a different e-mail address while in the US but I see that I
failed to record it. If anyone on Melanet has it, could you please post it?
I think it may be sdamadi@... but am not sure.

help needed locating ed. of Firdawsi (Bibliotheca Persica, 1)

A researcher urgently needs the following work:

Ferdowsi, The Shahnameh, I. Ed. Djalal Khalegh-i Motlagh (Khaliq-i Mutlaq)
Bibliotheca Persica, 1; Persian texts series, n.s. 1 (New York, 1988).

It is cited in Index Islamicus, with no. of pages indicated, so I assume
the work exists. But it's not in our library's collection and attempts
at locating it in OCLC and RLIN did not turn up any holdings elsewhere.
Then again, it's possible I didn't use the right search strategy ...

Can anyone suggest a library that has holdings of this particular work?

Thanks!
Andras
