Turkish Senate Archives reported pulped

The archived records of Turkey's senate (Cumhuriyet Senatosu), the
upper chamber of the Turkish parliament est. in 1961 and abolished under
the new constitution adopted after the 1980 military coup, have been
sent to SEKA (a recycling facility) and burned or pulped as waste paper.

According to a report published in the 29 July issue of the newspaper
Radikal Turkiye, the destruction of the documents was confirmed by
Mustafa Kalemli, the former speaker of parliament. Mr. Kalemli termed
the pulping of the Senate archives during his term as speaker a "mistake"
and claimed he only learned of the destruction after the fact. For the
full article, see

     http://www.radikal.com.tr/1999/07/29/turkiye/sen.html

Thanks to Ebru Icin, Information Center Archivist of Sabanci University,
and to Bekir Kemal Ataman for bringing this disturbing news to our
attention.
