Officer, websites, etc.

My first opinion is about the problem of moving the
listserve/website/Sec.Tr. records which are now on Access. If we rented
webspace, whoever took over a job might have to learn whatever technology
the vendor we rent from uses. There is no guarantee it would be the same
as that used at the person's institution. One would hope that any
candidate applying for a position requiring computer skills would have, or
at least have the aptitude to work with computers. I've got a listserve
account here. It was easy to get. A lot of universities offer free
listserves for staff members. If the incoming and outgoing people have
the requisite computer skills, I don't think transferring the listserve
should be a prohibitive problem. I very much agree with Ali's comment:
"do we really want to spend funds to get something we are already getting
for free (list & page)? "

While Ed proposed this as a way, I think, to strengthen ties between
MELANET and MELA and to honor Ali, the progression of the discussion is
toward making the position elective. I don't think I was around for the
start of MELANET, but it seems to have been created by Ali and runs as a
general service for interested parties, not a strictly for MELA members
service. By making this elective, are we pulling a personal project out
from under Ali? At this stage, could he insert himself in the discussion
and say he's happy the way things are? I have no idea how he feels, but
could picture it being awkward to make that sort of comment. Is any other
member dying to run MELANET? We usually aren't flooded with candidates.

My feeling is that one shouldn't combine too many tasks in one position.
Do members have several hours a week during work time to contribute to
MELA, or are we mostly overworked? Are members willing to give up regular
amounts of family time, social life, etc? I'm keeping the mailing list on
Access and have created a couple form letters and an invoice template.

Sivas yearbooks

Does anyone hold either the 1288 or 1306 yearbook for Sivas Vilayeti? I
haven't been able to locate them through the normal routes.

Thanks.

Remember to vote in MESA elections

To all,

Please remember, those of you who are members of MESA, that we have a
member (Andras) who is running for the Board of Directors of MESA.
Please consider supporting one of our own on the MESA Board. And
remember that ballots are due back at MESA headquarters by October 26th.

To reiterate what I I've already said in answering John, it would be
fairer and more rewarding to make MELANET-L an elected office of MELA. I
personally consider managing the list as a service rather than a "personal
project." Since I can not be accused of having a fragile psyche, it would
be my pleasure to pass MELANET-L to another elected member (well, I will
accept to be the first candidate).

Re: Officer, websites, etc.

Since Ali volunteered to maintain MELANET-L from the beginning, and since
he did an excellent job maintaining it, from his replay I think he seems
not to be complaining or asking for some sort of reward. As he is presently
receiving support from his institution, let us leave it as it is until he
decides that he does not want to maintain it any more. Then, maybe, we can
think about finding an alternative, as Ed recently proposed.

Re: Remember to vote in MESA election

Hi John:
Thank you for this reminder. We have been talking at getting one of our
members on MESA committees and this is a great chance for us to do so.
Please do not just vote for Andraes, but urge your faculty to do so also.

Also do not forget to vote for Jere for President elect of MESA. Jere is
also a member of MELA for many years and although not a librarian, he is
a strong supporter of us and our work.

On the issue of MELANET-L, I would like to suggest that we should make a
recommendation to MELA President to appoint the person managing the
list serve to the Executive Board when needed rather than making it an
elected position. At the present it is not
needed because Ali is already on the Board for two years.

Hotels in Chicago

MELA members,

Time for our meeting is rapidly approaching. For those of you who are
not able to get into the Hilton, or want something a little cheaper
there are two hotels adjacent that might do. The Essex Inn is just
across the street to the south. It is not as fancy as the Hilton (only
a single diamond rating by AAA--the Hilton is 4 diamonds) but its rates
starts in the $90 range, as does the Blackstone, which is across the
street to the north of the Hilton (no AAA rating).

The Essex Inn can be reached at 312.939.2800 and the Blackstone at
312.427.4300 or 800.622.6330.
