Sudan acquisitions

MELA colleagues:

The following is a status report on our Sudanese acquisitions and your
orders.

Ever since the US Embassy closed in Khartoum, we have been trying to
establish contact with our Sudanese vendor in Khartoum. We have finally
done so, and have set up weekly teleconferences with him. Needless to say,
we have to find other means for him to ship your (and LC's) materials to
Cairo, since it is of course no longer possible for him to deliver them to
the USIS office at the U.S. Embassy for shipping to LC/Cairo via APO.

This week, for the first time, he will use regular international mail/air
freight to do this. I will keep you informed.

Arabic/Persian Cataloging Manual

A few years ago there were some discussions among MELA members about an
Arabic/Persian cataloging manual. Joan Biella, as I remember, did a great
deal of preparation by herself for the group--although LC would offer no
practical support for the idea--and John Eilts was instrumental in
organizing and coordinating the efforts. At some point a committee was
convened to work on the project (I still have some sketchy documentation
from a couple of meetings that took place). Needless to say, not much has
happened since then. Is there still an interest in such an undertaking? I
think it is a project worth reviving; and may be the MELA Exec. Board can
play an active role in it.

Re: Arabic/Persian Cataloging Manual

Yes, there is still an interest in reviving this project and it's
something that others may be interested in continuing as well. I'm fairly
certain Joan is still interested in the project as I am (I did some of the
early work with her). Perhaps this could come up at the MELA meeting.

MELA ME cataloging guide thread

Let me add this to the current thread on MELA's putting together and
publishing a guide to ME cataloging:

it has occurred to me once again how useful it would be to have a real
directory of MELA people. We have the membership list, now easily
available on the web pages that Jonathan maintains, but all that does is
give us addresses without telling us who's who.

what positions in our various institutions--who's in charge of the
collection, who's in charge of cataloging, who the various other personnel
may be, with addresses, telephone/fax numbers, and e-mail addresses. Home
addresses and telephone numbers could be included if the members
wished--although maybe not, if this were maintained on-line. Personally, I
would like to have something like this in book format

to work on it and contribute to it, and to bring it up at the meeting.

Re: Arabic/Persian Cataloging Manual

Ali,
There is a need and a lot of interest in such a cataloging manual.
I,ll be more happy to participate in the Arabic cataloging part of it.
Hope you are having a relaxing summer,
See you at MELA,
Elie
