As you may have read or heard, the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) recently received a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support the new Global Resources Program. The Program is a direct "descendent" of various earlier AAU/ARL initiatives in which area librarians were involved, among them the Foreign Acquisitions Project, the AAU/ARL Task Force on the Acquisition and Distribution of Foreign-Language and Area Studies Materials, and, most recently the three pilot projects, on Japan, Germany and Latin America. The basic goal of the Global Resources Program is to expand scholarly access to foreign materials, regardless of their format or where they are held. We are developing a set of strategies that will allow us to do this without requiring large infusions of new funding for libraries (which are unlikely to be available). One strategy is to expand from the pilot projects (Japan, Germany, Latin America) and provide seed money for similar projects covering other regions, beginning with Southeast Asia,(Continue reading)
