"Lifestyle experiments" or maybe the available concatenation "Lifestyles
$x Experiments"--I like that! The scope note for the free-floating
subdivision $x Experiments says: "[use] under scientific or technical
topics for discussions about experiments and instructions for carrying
them out"--but its application is not formally restricted to technical
subjects. I don't think it would be any stretch to characterize
Farewell my Subaru as "Sustainable living $x Experiments." And I
suppose you could attach "Jewish law $x Experiments" to The year of
living biblically.

But that only covers part of the genre--I don't think you could consider
Julie and Julia or The know-it-all as "lifestyle experiments."

Re: What are classification numbers for La Vista, Nebraska?

Looking at ClassWeb. Start with F674 (works about cities) and cutter by the
city and then the main entry (author, or title, whichever is appropriate.

Gore Vidal's novel, The judgment/judgement of Paris, redux

I want to amend my previous posting about the edition of 5 of Vidal's novels published w/o a collective
title: Julian ; Williwaw ; The judgement [sic] of Paris ; Messiah ; The city and the pillar. (New York :
Octopus Books ; W. Heinemann, 1979.) OCLC 6125821. I said re the spelling of "judgement" in the third title
listed that it was "an ERROR by the publisher." In data available elsewhere re this edition appears the
word "import." Both publishers are British publishers (with offices in New York at the time of
publication). I also said in my message that all other editions have the word spelled "judgment." Since
sending my message I have discovered there is a  British edition with title: The judgement [sic] of
Paris. (London : Panther, 1974.) OCLC 16243346.  Also later British editions published by Abacus with
"judgement." Aha! It is NOT a case of ERROR on the part of the publisher[s] but rather the deliberate
replacement of American English with
British English! My apologies to our British friends and AUTOCAT readers! Whether these editions
require filing titles in American library catalogs I'll leave to another day.

Re: Film production companies

Happy New Year Mac,

Well, I Netflixed myself into a stupor, with all kinds of classic, foreign
and Clint Eastwood (!) films.

All six of us (son, daughter in law and three granddaughters) saw Avatar
in the theater. They kill you with mind numbing previews for twenty
minutes before the feature presentation.

It may not be of any interest anymore, but to my way of thinking, the 245
should have the film title, then [videorecording] and should be followed by
the SOR as it appears in the title frames. Does RDA allow for shortening
too many names, like AACR2 did? (No more ... [et al.]) It should be like
the title page in a book, but then I'm thinking of archival collections of
thousands of films.

I once gave the example of Titanic, which summoned forth 8 or 9 entries in
the IMDb, and if we had those in our collection (we don't, just the James
Cameron film) the statement of responsibilities would identify each for
research purposes.

I'm still here, but noting the proceedings from the comforts of home. As
it turns out, I would not have been on the job after May, because of DROP
(retirement plan, five years and you then must retire, and are out the door
with a lump sum) so I didn't cut and run to avoid RDA. Having said that,
the advent of AACR2 was a heady time, we were pumped and looking forward.
That's not the case with RDA.

These days the production company(ies) rarely appear(s) on the title
frame, unless at head of title, e.g., "Walt Disney Presents ...".
The production companies appear one per frame before the title frame,
often accompanied by there logo, e.g., lighthouse, boy fishing from
the moon, skyline at night, etc.

>Does RDA allow for shortening >too many names, like AACR2 did? (No

The rule of three will be gone with RDA. You can have any number of
authors in the statement of responsibility. For personal authors, the
first is prime entry; for treaties it is the first country mentioned;
but for production companies, this never happens. As works of mixed
responsibility title is prime entry, even with "a film by <writer
director>"; this for me is an argument for putting all production
credits together in the credit note.

An added entry for any entity wished would be justified by the credit
note, just as entries for actors are justified by the cast note. They

Re: 650 and 655

the Library of Congress has confirmed that, with some exceptions, it is generally appropriate to code form
& genre headings in the format "655 _0 Heading." rather than the old method of coding them in the format "650
_0 Heading.", as long as there is a topical authority record for the heading.

See http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/genre_form_faq.pdf question #28 for the details.

Subject: 650 and 655

Hello everyone-

I have a question which may seem basic, but I have not run into this
situation before. I have an item to catalog that is strictly clip art that
was sent from Hasbro, Inc. to retailers to use in their print ads.

The item "is" clip art, and is not "about" clip art, therefore, I would
want to use a genre/form term. However, in LCSH, "Clip art" is listed as a
150 and not a 155.

My question is, in the subject fields, can I change the item from a 650 to

Re: 650 and 655

Great ... if I understand correctly. Just to make sure: If I have an old
hymnal to catalog (and I have had many over the years) I may use the
subject heading Hymns in a 655 _0, even though it is not yet established
as a LC genre term-- because it is established as a LCSH 150 _0; but I
cannot use the subject Hymnals in a 655 _0 because it is not an
established LCSH heading. Have I got it straight?

Thank you.
