310 field in serials question

What does the following mean in the 310: Semiannual,|b1989-<1996>

What is, and why is, the bracketed 1996?

From the section on the 310 and 321 fields in the CONSER Editing Guide:

"Uncertain data (a known date that may not be the earliest or latest)
is enclosed in angle brackets and may be suppressed from printing on output.
   310 ## Annual, $b <1984->
   321 ## Semiannual, $b 1976-<1982>"

From section 13.3.4 in the CONSER Cataloging Manual (on the 310 and 321
fields):

"When the exact date range is unknown, give what is known in angle
brackets."

Similar language is used in 13.2.4.

Re: 310 field in serials question

Hi Gene,

If you have access to "Cataloger's Desktop" you can get the answers to
most of your questions via the "CONSER Cataloging Manual" (CCM) or the
"CONSER Editing Guide" (CEG). The CCM is fairly well indexed and also
searchable so its pretty easy to find an explanation for just about any
situation. It usually gives the reasons why a decision was made and the
history of cataloging treatment, so you know why a record last updated
in 2001 looks different from a record last updated in 2003, etc. The CEG
is organized by MARC tag (similar to OCLC's "Bibliographic Formats and
Standards."

We're not a CONSER library, but I regularly refer to the manuals to make
heads and tails of what I see in records.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Seeking volunteers and input for moving image work project

OLAC (Online Audiovisual Catalogers) has been investigating ideas for improving access to moving image
works for some time (see http://www.olacinc.org/drupal/?q=node/27). I am hoping to apply for a grant
for a demonstration project. I have put together an overview of what I hope can be done at http://ilocker.bsu.edu/users/kmcgrath/world_shared.

The basic goals I see for this experiment at this point are:

1. Import and convert current MARC manifestation-level bibliographic records into FRBR-based records,
including both work/primary expression records (similar to an IMDb record) and records with
expression- and manifestation-level limiters linked to items in libraries or archives to help users
find the particular item(s) that meet their needs.

2. Create an end-user interface for searching, browsing, and obtaining moving image materials that
leverages facets based on structured data to improve browsing and navigation.

3. Develop a back-end maintenance module that supports adding new records, editing and merging existing
records, and deleting records in single record and batch mode.

I am looking for people who would be interested in brainstorming and fleshing out the details of a grant
proposal and possibly being involved in an eventual grant.

If you would like to participate in this discussion, please send me an email at
kmcgrath@... by Monday, October 12, stating why you're interested in this
project and what you think you could contribute. We need all sorts of perspectives, including
cataloging/metadata, database design, web design, user needs assessment, user interface
construction, budgeting, etc., etc. Or even if you're just interested in taking part in the discussion.

Thank you.

Kelley

Re: Intellectual Access to Preservation Metadata Interest Group seeks input

I am not a member of these groups, and my comments are actually based on
experiences in a different field of interest.

As you may know, there a various groups dedicated to digitizing
manuscripts of the Bible. One of these is CSNTM, which is trying to have
all manuscripts on one Web site, which would be extremely useful to
everyone. But the owners of many of the manuscripts, such as
universities, libraries, museums, etc., wish to have these manuscripts on
their own sites. Of course, links are one way to handle this situation,
but one wonders if the issues raised by this type of situation shouldn't
be discussed. Besides all the different Biblical manuscripts, there would
be Hindu, Buddhist, etc. manuscripts, as well as the materials of any
given author, ancient or modern.

Just a thought off the top of my head.

Re: Are you having a "paranormal" experience over paranormality? :ISSNs

Gene,

If you believe that a publisher is using the wrong ISSN on its titles, whether for an older title, another
physical format, or apparent random whimsicality, AND that journal is published in the United States,
consider sending that information to
issn@...
That will allow the US ISSN Center, as its time and resources permit, to instruct the publisher on the
importance and benefits of using the proper ISSN.

Journal in question: Journal of Spirituality and Paranormal Studies
(formerly The Journal of Religion and Psychical Research). The really
correct ISSN (per actual perusal of issue) is 1731-2148, which,
according to OCLC, is the ISSN for the previous instantiation of this
title.

If one were to believe the OCLC record *67770638, ISSN is something
completely different. It appears that the current title simply took
the ISSN of the previous title and used it (whether they should have

Gonzalez: Historia del pensamiento cristiano

Reference librarian brought down this puzzlement to me

1. Historia del pensamiento cristiano / Justo L. Gonzalez. 1965 (one
volume covering the beginnings to Chalcedon. (Apparently this later
reworked, either in the later English and/or Spanish editions.

2. Historia del pensamiento cristiano / Justo L. Gonzalez. c2002 (3
vol. in one), which, if I read the Spanish correctly when I first
catalogued it, is the revised edition of his work on the history of
Christian thought; there is an English revised ed.; but if I read the
Spanish correctly, the 2002 edition is another and different revised
edition. (I went to the stacks to check on the book, bu it was not on
the shelf). Except for the 1965 volume, Gonzalez does not seem to
have written the work completely in Spanish. Gonzalez is completely
bilingual, so one is not the translation of the the other. I
catalogued the 2002 edition, and I quoted the Spanish in a note.
Perhaps, someone more fluent in Spanish than I am could surmise if I
understood the Spanish correctly; it appears that Gonzalez is saying
how well his earlier English editions did in North America; it was now
time to write in his mother tongue.

Anyway keep your eyes peeled (sp?)!

You can view the post here:

<http://article.gmane.org/gmane.education.libraries.autocat/25627>

A display issue: your browser (or the gmane site) may render words with
hyphens/dashes on either side of the term in "strikethrough" font, hence
the crossed-out "History" subdivisions and some dates.
