The provider neutral e-monograph marc record guide (combing electronic
smd with collation of original) is a giant step forward from both the
strange mix of carrier and content smds in AACR2 samples, and in
advising not to use 533) from the LCRI which turns AACR2 on its head.
The advice not to use 256 computer file characteristics is also good.
But its provisions differ in many ways from those our clients have
come to prefer.
The provision for 020 agrees with our practice, 020$a for the
electronic ISBN, and 020$z for the print ISBN. But even though MARC21
has the same provision for 010 LCCN, that practice is not suggested.
The print LCCN is not to be entered in 010 at all.
Where there is electronic vendor added value, making the electronic
version a different edition from the same work provided by another
vendor, we have found combining the print and electronic imprint
information helpful; the print publisher in 260$a$b$c, and the
electronic publisher in 260$e$f$g. This is of course not a provider
neutral record, since there would be only one provider of such an
enhanced resource.
The instruction to always use the smd "online resource" is far too
general, even if limited to monographs, to please our clients. They
wish specific smds, e.g., "electronic text" for text, plus "website",
"computer program", "computer game", etc. In addition, the use of the
term "online resource" duplicates that term in MARC21 337 carrier
